What happened on opening night to make her ineligible? She didn't perform. She wasn't ready to take the stage at that point in time (understandably).

Yeah, the Tony's have a rule that if you don't perform on opening night you would not be eligable for a Tony nomination, which is why Andy Karl had to get better from his injury at Groundhog Day, otherwise he would not have got his third Tony nomination. I imagine the Oliviers have a same kinda of view. Which I get and if that is a rule, it's not really fair in this circumstane but we shall see.

I thought the Olivier rule was about number of performances by the cut off date rather than about performing on opening night?

I thought the Olivier rule was about number of performances by the cut off date rather than about performing on opening night? I think that's the production itself rather than specific performances. That rule sits at 30 performances, which I think is kinda shaley though as Mrs Henderson Presents and Beautiful were very close to the cut off and got nominated. And I don't know if they had enough performances under their belt by then, especially Henderson!

If Ruthie ends up being eligible, then she’ll get it. It’s a better performance than Patti (sorry @ryan !) and it means a lot more.
That said, if LuPone won for Not Getting up off her chair for all of that penulitmate scene in Company I’d be 100% fine with it 😂😂

I’m pretty sure the rule isn’t ‘30 performances by the cut-off date’ but essentiallly ‘at least 30 performances planned’, otherwise they’re bending that eligibility rule a lot! Beautiful was nowhere near 30 at the cut-off date that year, they’d only done 2 weeks of previews and had press night on the cut off date, and Mrs Henderson Presents had only done a week of previews by the cut off!

Am I lost or Lead Actor in a Musical doesn't have a competition?
Who will be the nominees? Mostly of the musicals this season are female lead and the ones with male leads are basicaly overshadowed or are not getting praise enough to warrant a win.
Also, can the legendary Rachel Tucker give a run for LuPone? She's playing a great role with a perfect solo and the Colella (who played on Broadway) almost won the Tony.

Was just thinking too, is Rachel Tucker on the fast track to an Olivier before it's even opened? Patti, Ruthie and one of the Fun Home girls, Rachel feels like the natural next nominee because of the role and the fact we already know Rachel's talent?
... she won't beat Patti, there's no way.

I think it will be a crying shame if Jamie Muscato doesn’t get nominated (and win, in my opinion) but I fear that Heathers will just be dismissed out of hand.
There definitely seems to be far more award-worthy leading female roles than male in this season’s musicals.

Though I would argue the only nominations it truly deserves it Jodie and Jamie, and I could see them being spoiler nominations for sure. Carrie won't be nominated, she has a grest performance but it's a stacked catagory.

Well, I agree, if Heathers is to get any nomination, Jamie Muscato should be the one getting it, and maybe CHF.

Can the actress playing Emmie at Caroline, or Change be a challenge to LuPone?

If you mean the woman in Company who strutted about a bit and who was the only one whose words I couldn’t understand, then by all means someone else.

I don't think Caroline will get anything other than Sharon, and even she is on rocky ground with a stacked catagory that Rosalie will win.

I'm intrigued by the three other musical acting races, simply because there doesn't even seem to be that many obvious nominees bar Patti LuPone, Jonathan Bailey and Ruthie Ann Miles (pending whether she is eligable or not!). I personally want to see Richard Fleeshman be nominated for Company too, he would be a thoroughly deserving nominee and I could see it happening too given the lack of other worthy nominees.

For the 2020 awards, there will be some slight changes to two categories. The Best Family and Entertainment category will be split to create Best Entertainment or Comedy Play, and Best Family Show. Best Original Score or New Orchestrations will replace Outstanding Achievement in Music.

I love these kind of years where there isn't a Harry Potter or a Hamilton that we just know is going to get every nomination and win every award. It'll make it more fun and exciting to watch.

I have to disagree with all the pro JB comments re Company and the Oliviers. His performance was very pantomimic when I saw the show a couple of weeks ago and to be honest, NGMT goes down so well because of the camp staging with the female priest and various surprise appearances. I also thought Mr Fleeshman gave quite a caricatured performance, he sounded like Bert/Ernie from Sesame St. IMHO I don’t think you deserve an Olivier nod because of a nice bod. I saw all the new musicals this year (apart from Tina, which I refused to pay such exorbitant prices for) and thought there were some terrific supporting performances that were less stagey and might attract Olivier attention. Guess we’ll see at the beginning of March. Here’s my list of eligible musicals with both Come From Away and Only Fools and Horses just sneaking in before the deadline. Chicago Phoenix Theatre Chess London Coliseum Come From Away Phoenix Theatre Company Gielgud Theatre The King And I London Palladium Kiss Me Kate London Coliseum Little Shop of Horrors. Open Air Theatre, Regent’s Park Fun Home Young Vic Strictly Ballroom Piccadilly Theatre Sylvia Old Vic Theatre Tina the Musical Aldwych Theatre Hadestown Natonal Theatre Caroline Or Change. Playhouse Theatre Twelfth Night Young Vic Only Fools and Horses TR Haymarket

I can understand why some don't enjoy Richard or Jonathans performances in Company, but at this point I'd be very surprised if at least one of them don't get nominated, especially as both got great reviews and most audience's seem to love them.
For me, it seems obvious Company will get the most nominations of the year. Taking everyone's personal feelings aside, I fully expect and imagine it will get nominations for:
Best Musical Revival Best Actress in a Musical (Rosalie) Best Supporting Actor in a Musical (Jonathan and/or Richard) Best Supporting Actress in a Musical (Patti) Best Director Best Set Design
If it goes into a sweep, it could also nab nominations in Lighting, Choreography and Outstanding Achievement in Music.
