I only stand if the production merits it. If I don't and those in front of me choose to because the performance has moved them to do so then I have no issue with that. It doesn't inconvenience me at all. In fact I feel happy that they have got more from the show than I have and felt moved to do so.

"Standing ovations are a time-honoured tradition" (a) Doesn't mean they're not selfish, 'cos time-honoured traditions can be immoral, wicked, sexist, oppressive ... and selfish ("I'm taking your virginity, young lady", says the lord of the manor; "It's a time-honoured tradition"); (b) they've grown in recent years because of those wretched TV talent shows, which encourage audiences to rise to their feet. Why did you only quote the part of my post that you could snipe at and not the part where I agree that a standing ovation is selfish or the part where I agree it sucks when you can't see the finale because the person in front of you is standing? I'm beginning to think you're not here for conversation at all.

What a lot of selfish people on here who need to stand to applaud! "Standing ovations are a time-honoured tradition" (a) Doesn't mean they're not selfish, 'cos time-honoured traditions can be immoral, wicked, sexist, oppressive ... and selfish ("I'm taking your virginity, young lady", says the lord of the manor; "It's a time-honoured tradition"); MMMM very questionable taste in making that comparison. Any sympathy for your argument completely lost. Let's be honest it's not much of an inconvenience to have to stand up in order to see the cast take their bows, is it? To express it in your terms, a gentleman would never mention such an inconsequential thing. Move along, show's over.

In my mind it's quite straightforward.
Standing ovation during bows: absolutely fine*
Standing ovation during performance: not okay. If you feel suddenly compelled to leap to your feet for whatever reason (hello Dreamgirls) then fine, but sit straight back down.
*the exception being if you're in front of a wheelchair or someone who can't stand up - this is the occasion that I would hold in my desire to stand, because it wouldn't be fair to stand in front of someone who physically can't stand.

A standing ovation is as much a part of theatre tradition as an interval drink, singing along with the songs at a musical, looking down on the great unwashed and touching up the cast mens at the stage door. It'll never change in London's glitzy West End.
Just a note, heaven help the audience behind me at 'Company' when Patti announces "I'd like to propose a toast". And as for when Jonny B comes on stage. Well he'll get a standing ovation from me. Every single time. Fnar.

The rudeness lies entirely in those who stand to applaud and thus make those behind stand too if they want to see the cast taking their bows. Couldn't you argue with equal validity that it's selfish to applaud at all, on the grounds that the noise interferes with the enjoyment of people who want to listen to the music?

This seems to be getting off the topic of 42nd Street! Couldn't we just agree to differ and move on?

This is never going to be a winning arguement. It can be seen as selfish to do either/or so let's just get over it and move on because it won't change anything and we are moving away from the show itself.
Matthew Goodgame has tweeted he is I'll, so likely Philip will be on for Pat for the next few days.

Perhaps it derives from all that self-esteem they teach in schools these days. You are hilarious. May I suggest you never see a show on broadway. You will be raging.

Just to add, if I do choose to stand, and am in an aisle seat, I always move into the aisle to do so. I think many on here do the same. depends who is sat behind me. Not that I would ever dream of standing just to wind someone up...no of course not *cough*

Ive booked for my third and final visit. Bonnie clinched the deal. I’m afraid I WILL be standing for the curtain call and like 🍌 🐒 I’ll step discreetly into the aisle. You’ll never even notice me 😏

I can assure you all that if I get to this show before closing I’ll give it the biggest standing ovation my little 5’4 frame can muster

I find that posters response to standing ovations completely repellant.
The idea that one shouldn’t reward a brilliant show or performance with a standing ovation is insulting.
I hate nothing more than shows that don’t deserve a SO being given one, but can you imagine everyone sitting down while Imelda Staunton came onstage for her bow in Gypsy? The bows for The Inheritance ? Unbelievable.

Does anyone know if Bonnie has any holiday dates? TodayTix just put up an offer and I want to get booked in but sort of specifically to see her (love the show, but would really like to catch Bonnie)

Standing ovations - My wife doesn't stand up (she's a part time wheelchair user) so I sit with her. We have no problem with ovations although looking at a sea of arses is not my idea of fun. Only time I at all minded was seeing The Zombies at the Palladium. Everyone stood for the encore so we had to make do with listening only. But no big deal.
For me it's in the same league as a tall person in front or a fidgety child next to me. I'd rather not but I'm not going to stress over it.

Steph has said that she doesn’t have any scheduled Dorothy dates between now and closing so unless things have changed recently Bonnie will be there barring illness etc.

I had goosebumps watching that. What lucky lucky people in the theatre!
This show is the gift that keeps on giving.
