Think Prom, Be More Chill and King Kong won't be staying much longer sadly. Few mates who saw them last week said they were all empty at rear orchestra!

I think it’s a pretty average year for musicals but it’s quite an exciting year given how open it seems in terms of who will win the big categories.

I saw Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus last night. I expect no Tony winners from that show! (Although Julie White was actually quite good.)

It's tonight! Well for me tomorrow, once I've found a copy of the ceremony online and I can settle in with some Malteasers and a nice cup of tea. I think the musical categories are pretty locked down and I reckon ampersand above has got them spot on. Except I'm hoping Andre De Sheilds gets a long overdue Tony for Hadestown, it's certainly between him and Patrick Page for the win and they are both long standing New York actors. Mind you sentiment doesn't always come into the Tonys and someone else could squeak through.
The play categories I think are a bit less certain, although the list above again would make me happy perhaps with Jeff Daniels instead of Cranston? I am wondering how well What The Constitution Means To Me is going to do, I know next to nothing about it but it seems to be very popular and has a lot of buzz. And does it make a political statement that would go down well?

I'm not so sure about Bertie Carvel, I think Robin de Jesus has a good chance for The Boys in the Band. I like Carvel, but I don't think he should have won the Olivier for Ink, and I don't think he should win the Tony.

Tony Award Winner Bertie Carvel, I like the sound of that.
*It should be two time Tony Winner, but we are not going to go into that.

The Beetlejuice was pretty good, and this is coming form someone who was really disappointed by the show.

I can't say that any of the musical numbers makes we want to see those shows (apart from Oklahoma! that is). I passed up Hadestown at the NT, because I heard it wasn't very good. I am glad that Elaine May and Andre de Shields won. I think one of the Prom creators lives in my building.

Well the increase surely can't be based on their performance in the show as that was truly awful. And I say that as someone who loved the show at the National. Why choose a dirge like number that didn't feature three of your main cast, reduced another to a repeated line and a look of confusion and wasted Andre De Sheilds?
The show as a whole seemed very flat and I'm not sure why, James Corden despite wearing about 14 different outfits seemed barely there, at points with the audience interaction it reminded me of that Oscar debacle years ago with David Letterman. Corden has a love of theatre but that really didn't come across. The best play introductions by the authors gave almost no hint as to the plays and I struggle to see the purpose of them. The plays as per took a back seat and were pretty ignored. The clip from Choir Boy looked enticing, hope for a transfer of that. (Although why drag BeBe Winans out, especially with some of his families views? Could it be he has a show in workshop?)
Having the technical awards presented off air and then showcasing numbers from shows that were entirely ensemble (Kiss Me Kate) gives a real mixed message about what is being valued in the shows.
The Beetlejuice & The Prom performances was the only one where I thought I want to see that show now, interestingly neither won an award. Tootsie and Ain't Too Proud looked distinctly average although Santino Fontana's speech actually drew me to the show a little . (Side note from the Ain't Too Proud performance, why do performers sing in a distinctly modern style with all the riffing and melisma when the artists they are portraying did not sing that way, it pulls you out of the show as it just sounds wrong, the cast of Beautiful when I saw it were very guilty of this too)
The worst by far was The Cher Show, Dear God that looks appalling, it was like a Stars In Their Eyes runners up show produced by the Piecrust Players. The mind boggles that this won any awards (And yes Stephanie J Block is a national treasure but come on!!)

The show had way too much shtick from James Corden. It's a shame that they special awards to Rosemary Harris and Terrence McNally were not part of the live ceremony.
