On the plus side, I've never seen or heard this Kirsten Chenoweth lady before, and have only heard her name on here. But she seems really lovely, and I liked her (singing) voice, so yay.

Daniel was definitely the best of the group and a well deserved win.

Alan Titchmarsh was emoting so much I thought he was going to launch himself into space! Bless! The expert panel includes Kevin Clifton who I saw deliver a woeful, vacant and sterile performance in Rock Of Ages last week. The show feels like X Factor when they let ‘non-singers’ who think they can sing audition and we are encouraged to laugh at them.I do like Aladdin Genie Trevor’s pink jacket though.

Daniel was definitely the best of the group and a well deserved win. Yep, at least someone genuinely good won the thing. Some of the scoring was ridiculous.

Daniel was great. All credit to these guys for ‘having a go’,but I do agree with earlier comments about tv doing a real show that either searches for new talent or spotlights some of the rising stars in musicals.Wonder what the ratings are going to be for this?

One of my ex-students is dancing in the show so I am watching to support him.If this kind of thing helps to sell tickets in the West End and in the regions for the crazy wonderful thing we call musical theatre then I am all for it.Might be a big if,mind! Very big!

Agree on Kristin and Elaine. They made it look so easy as did the Aladdin crew.Saw the Aladdin performance at West End Live last year and was impressed with them but haven’t seen the actual show in the West End yet.

I agree with most comments, the majority weren’t great but good for them giving it a go and a well deserved winner. I’d also love a return of the ALW talent search shows.

It's a shame that Daniel had to perform to a half empty theatre. Can't have been very nice for him and I'm sorry I had scarpered by that point. Hate to disrespect performers like that, but it was so late. I'm very glad he won, he really stood out. Yes, it was cheesy and the performers not that high quality, but they all came across as genuinely terrified, having had very little prep, not proper training as they would in Strictly or Dancing on Ice. I applaud anything that gets musical theatre numbers on tv, and enjoy watching them. I thought the ensemble was top notch and the staging and scenery pretty impressive for one-off performances. The "opening" Mary Poppins number was lovely, and I enjoyed the pre-recorded Aladdin bit, although Kevin dancing on for a few moments was a bit random, they could have worked him in a bit more! And it was a real treat to see EP and Kristen perform together, I found that quite emotional.

I wish they'd do a proper musicals show, with proper musical performers who can actually perform. Gary Wilmot did a series years ago, maybe in the early 90s? I remember it being excellent - it showcased current good performers at the time, and I think encouraged people to actually go to the theatre. Stuff like this is why normal people expect a celebrity name in a musical and won't go if they're "just" musical theatre actors who aren't massively famous. Or actually carry forward the ALW idea of showcasing potential talent and building some stars. Its been 9 years since the last of his BBC shows and the best of the talent he found is now providing leads to multiple musicals and one award winning film star. Time to restoke interest and advertise musical theatre again.
I think most people watching this would resolve never to go to a musical if it sounded this weak
I'd love Kristin and Elaine to be on the judging panel of a revamped casting show. Search for Elsa? The loser each week being told "You're frozen out" and then trying to sing let it go through tears.

jaqs I’d watch the hell out of that. I have a cold so I have settled in to watch this on catch up. Would never have known about it without this thread!

I’m really surprised they couldn’t get famous people who can stay in tune. This feels like a really missed opportunity.
Lady from Fools and Horses, lady from Emmerdale and London the stand up comedian were all woeful vocally.
On the positive side I guess it shows how hard it is to do this.

Can we just have a show where Daniel Brocklebank rehearses in a singlet? Every week?

The show was not as bad as I was expecting. La Paige and La Barrowman were superb and fulfilled their roles magnificently.
I think people are being hard on Tessa Peake Jones. In terms of acting through song, she completely got it, and in her method is essentially no different to what Judi Dench does when she tackles a musical.
I've never paid much attention to Kristen Chenowith before - she's never done any shows that have appealed to me - but I was converted after seeing her on this.
The duet on I Know Him So Well was stellar. EP doing well given the ravages of time on her voice now (although it really is too ragged to do that counterpoint section in verse two nicely, without pulling unfortunate focus from Kristen)
Not sure whether it was a mistake that in chorus 2, EP didn't sing her right part and therefore they were singing the same bits (wasn't he good, wasn't he fine) as Kristen...

distantcousin Yes! Good analysis. It felt a bit like EP was trying to change her emphasis and not just sing it the way it was on the record, which then resulted in a botch. Shame really.

I’ve been to a few TV tapings - back in the day I’m even somewhere in Duran Duran’s Reflex video. I have to say when I was younger and needed a free night out they were okay but as you say they tend to drag on. This sounds just poorly handled especially in such a large venue. I don’t think I’d do it again unless it’s someone really special - Babs I’m looking at you ! My mates been to Graham Norton a few times and they seem to be okay as when they have the big Hollywood stars they don’t keep them hanging around. Also if you’re up for it First Dates is fun - they don’t use everyone and there’s so many cameras it’s literally dinner and a post dinner film if they choose you. That's cool being in the Reflex video, I can remember that back in the day, filmed in Toronto I think. Bit off topic, but wanted to reply to hitster. There were 2 versions of the video I think. The first was filmed on their North American tour mainly in Toronto. They then made a tv/video special based around the Arena album and filmed more footage in the NEC Birmingham. About a 1000 of us were herded in front of the stage whilst they filmed more spectacular camerawork. They had flats they filmed through so it looked like we were in a massive arena. They also had a set behind the stage where they filmed some story scenes - something about robots getting freaky in green slime was all I remembered. They then used the video from this sometimes on TV. I’m also in the Tina Turner Private Dancer tour video somewhere- but that’s another story. Any way back to All Star Musicals. I really rather enjoyed it. Paige/Chenoweth was brilliant. I liked Tessa, but I’m partial to a bit of speaksong. Shame the taping sounded such a nightmare.

New Christmas line up.
Host John Barrowman, Gyles Brandreth, Fern Britton, Radzi Chinyanganya, Ben Miller, Anita Rani, Cath Tyldesley.
Judges are Samantha Barks, Trevor Dion Nicholas and Elaine Paige.
I thought Barrowman was out of favour at ITV?

Isn't it lovely that his punishment for years of flashing his co-stars is to relegate him to... a cushy, high paid ITV job.

I recall when ITV announced that JB was no longer going to be a judge on Dancing on Ice, they did mention he'd still be hosting All Star Musicals. A strangely mixed message really.
