Having been recommended to watch this by fellow board member @jbc , I managed to pick up a $49 ticket (thanks to a BroadwayBox code) in the Mezz for the Friday night performance. I have to say that after watching it, I’m really glad I took up the recommendation. A big thanks to @jbc for the tip-off and also a big thanks to the box office staff at the Helen Hayes theatre for a 5* customer service. The staff provided me with a great central seat with an unobstructed view.
It was an absolutely fantantastic piece of theatre over the 2 and a quarter hrs. Michael Urie was brilliant as Arnold. His delivery of the lines with so much energy really was something special The comedy (both verbal and physical) was first class, but when needed, he could turn the character into this lonely and isolated individual at a drop of a hat.
Mercedes Ruehl as his mother only appeared in Act 2, but she certainly gave a great performance as his mother. Her witty and sometimes barbed comments really did hit the mark with the audience. I really don’t want to say too much about her character as it would give away a few spoilers for people yet to see it, but certainly you get your money’s worth from her when she is on stage.
With the other cast, Ward Horton as the on/off boyfriend of Arnold gives a lot of depth to his character Ed as you see his journey of self discovery over the play. Roxanna Radia as Ed’s girlfriend and Jack Difalco as David also turn out solid performances. There really isn’t a weak link amongst them. Ultimately, it’s Mike Urie who steals the show and is worth the ticket price alone.
This is a play that will give you plenty of laughs, but there are a few shocking moments as a counterbalance to the comedy. If you are planning a trip to NY anytime soon, this is definitely a show worth spending your money on. You won’t be disappointed. You also get free badges on your way out at the end of the show!
