As the 2nd show of my NY trip, it was a nice surprise to have another 90min with no interval play. I managed to get a $49 discounted seat with an excellent view. Though walking into the auditorium at the Tony Kiser Theatre (sorry, I won’t use the US spelling!), I don’t think you could get a bad view as it is a really small auditorium with only the stalls/orchestra seating. Though I did notice some seating next to me on a raised level.
The play itself (written by the same author as DEH)is set in 1969 at the time of the Vietnam war and looks at a group of 20-somethings and their plans to start a revolution against what they see as a corrupt government and a protest against the war itself. All this is done in a communal apartment in NY.
Overall, I found this to be a bit of slow burner over the 90mins although it did hold my interest for the entire time. It did ask some interesting questions about how far are you willing to go to maintain your principals on issues. There was certainly a lot of free love going on during the play with one of the male characters seemingly unable to not get involved with every girl he meets.
As for the set, it was similar to that of the NT’s recent Home, I’m Darling with a full mock up an apartment in this case. The majority of the action of the play was based in the apartment set throughout the entire time.
Cast wise, I thought did well with the material, although I wouldn’t say there was any particular standout moments during the production. I must admit it was nice not to have the obligatory cheer every time someone came onto the stage.
Not a bad night at the theatre, but certainly not a production that I would want to revisit if it ever got staged in the UK. 3*
