One of the greatest voices has been silenced.
A full life. A rare gift. At least her recordings live on.
RIP La Stupenda

Yes, a truly great soprano. I tire of the 'we won't see her like again,' sort of comment but this time it's true. She had amazing purity of tone, an ability to diminuendo on an exposed high note (listen to her Liu in Turandot) and superhuman breath-control. I was lucky enough to hear the latter displayed at ROH when she sang Norma. The second time I saw her there she was sensational in Un Ballo in Maschera with Luciano Pavarotti. Just imagine a cast like that today!

Sad to hear of her death but at least she got to a good age. I'm too young to have seen her live so I only know her from recordings.
