Yes it is odd, especially for a venue that only has a single stage - will there be enough for them both to do on a full-time basis ? Maybe Goold will be able to spend lots of time away directing film/TV etc. I think this is exactly it. They seem to have an arrangement at the Almeida where both can go off and transfer/do work elsewhere (NT, West End, Broadway etc.), while having a steady pair of hands on the theatre. I'm really, really excited to see what they both produce at the OV - especially since Frecknall has never actually directed there. I imagine it'll be the same recipe that has boosted the Almeida to international success: starry revivals of classics with a modern spin, some good new writing from abroad, and the occasional musical that transfers unsuccessfully to Broadway (Goold and Warchus have that much in common!) Goold likes directing on a big stage, his favourite theatre is the Lyttelton. Maybe at the OV he’ll be able to direct some big plays that weren’t suitable for the Almeida stage - some Shakespeares maybe.

He's been the best AD working in London for many years so it is a good move for the OV - I wonder what attracted him to the job ? Very tough to replace him at the Almeida - they should sound out Robert Icke. The absolute last person any venue should sound out. Why, out of interest?

The absolute last person any venue should sound out. Why, out of interest? You’ll need to ask around to industry people. The Almeida certainly won’t let him be running their building.

Could Michael Longhurst be tempted back into an AD role at the Almeida? His tenure at Donmar was a bit hit and miss I know but the hits were rather wonderful and I think his style would work at the Almeida

I was thinking maybe Max Webster, who was Associate at the Donmar and seems to be directing every show in London. Jeremy Herrin? Lyndsey Turner would be good but I suspect she isn't interested in running a building. Carrie Cracknell?

Herrin runs Second Half Productions so I can't imagine he'd want to be saddled with running a building.

Not Lyndsey Turner, god, please no. Let’s not turn beautiful and ever exciting Almeida into a boring miserable place..

Wikipedia can't put up a page for her, even a basic one, because she took steps to prevent them from ever doing so. Apart from her Olivier acceptance speech there are hardly even any photos of her online. I'd be astonished if she was willing to consider a role as high profile as being an AD.

What about Deborah Warner?! She's just had three brief seasons at the Ustinov and I just wonder if she stopped because it wasn't central enough to the culture (and was simply too small). The Almeida would be ideal for her. She could direct a couple of productions a year and get other directors in she admires for the rest. People would be far more likely to do stuff for her there than in Bath.
