Desi deserves A LOT of credit for stepping in like this. I mean she hasn’t even played Jenna recently right? I guess Stephanie Torns or Molly Jobe weren’t able to do it as they’d be a more obvious choice given they‘ve only just finished understudying the role on broadway. And Kat woulda been an obvious choice but she’s on hol before her tour starts next week and she’d probably cost the show a lot of money also if they brought her back for a week. Sara too!
The producers prob rang up every Jenna that’s ever been to check their availability 😆

She must also have a very good relationship with the producers since she was Roxie in Chicago on Broadway. I think it's way more sensible to get a principle tour Jenna to do this kind of thing, compared to an understudy, because she's proven that she can handle playing the role every day while traveling, lacking sleep etc. We've blamed the producers of Waitress for loads of things but this was actually a very quick and smart reaction to prevent from another show cancellation.

Gutted I'm working then off on holiday on Wednesday, otherwise I'd have gone to see Desi! How exciting for her!

I was in the audience on Saturday afternoon for the cancelled matinee. There are a lot of people on social media unreasonably being annoyed at the show being cancelled as if the cast can help being ill, but equally there are a lot of people who weren't there who are intentionally or otherwise missing the point. I do feel like as an audience we were treated poorly by whoever took the decision not to tell people until show time. There's no way they were trying to run the show and someone couldn't do it last minute - Olivia had tweeted she wasn't on by just after 2pm, and when Marisha came out to do the announcement she was clearly in her own clothes, hair and make up, not show prep. If they had told people as they turned up, those who had travelled a distance had time to get to another theatre and see something else if they wished. Instead, they denied people that option, and actively sold merchandise, drinks, programmes etc knowing customers wouldn't be seeing the show. Not to mention the horrible position front of house staff were put in - not their fault either!
I spoke to a friend afterwards who had come down just before 2:30 to see what was happening having seen the furore on social media. Apparently when they arrived FOH staff assumed they were there to see the show and tried to usher them into the auditorium - even while getting out the piles of refund letters.
At least people for the evening show were contacted with enough warning to make alternative plans in London, even if they were already travelling, and were given the option of the short concert the cast performed for those who had arrived.
Interestingly from the dates on Desi's post, it looks like they knew they'd contacted her and she was already on the move by the time the shows on Saturday were cancelled. Hmmm.

Yeah I’m def not knocking the show for choosing Desi, but it’s still like 5 months since she’s done the show and with hardly any notice it’s a lot to ask for her to remember all the script etc, which is why I thought Steph or Molly might have been more obvious choices. But you’re right about tour Jennas maybe being more adaptable to last minute stuff like this! And like you say, Desi obviously has a good relationship with the producers, and it’s also good for her professionally to step in like this! Good for her, it must be pretty exciting!

Yeah I get people can be upset at a cancellation but it really couldn’t be helped if all 3 Jennas were legitimately sick .... but I do have a lot of sympathy with people who only found out once sat down, and like you say, had already bought programmes and drinks and other merch. That seems a bit sneaky. The show was probably thinking it was just an easier way of letting everyone know that the matinee was cancelled if it was so last minute, but I don’t think it’s the best way of handling it. Also to get Marisha to do it doesn’t seem right idk lol! David likes to be the waitress spokesperson also so I’m surprised he didn’t step up tbh, lol!

Same thing was done with Amélie on Thursday for the matinée. Not told until 2pm when you showed up at the doors for the 2:30pm start. They were still selling day tickets as well, my friend bought one at midday- when they would have known the show wasn't going on.
Not good behaviour for either theatre.

She was great! A very different Jenna, more beaten down and world weary, but also wonderfully sarcastic at times. I think I saw someone say either here or on Twitter that she hadn’t played the role for 5 months? It was impossible to tell and she was 100% professional. It looked like she was wearing someone else’s diner outfit as it looked like the hem had been let down and I had assumed if she could get there her costumes could, but maybe not.
She got the giggles during (I think it was) bad idea reprise when David Hunter does the worm off the examination table to escape from nurse Norma which the audience loved and when she came out for the curtain call she looked pretty emotional. I can’t even imagine how exhausted she is!
The stalls were basically full except for the odd seat but I was beyond the overhang so couldn’t see what was going on upstairs.
She did the stage door for quite a while in the rain with no umbrella and talked to everyone which was lovely.
Anyway, I think I’ll be back before the end of the week. I find this kind of thing super exciting and just shows the unbelievable talent some people have.

Interestingly from the dates on Desi's post, it looks like they knew they'd contacted her and she was already on the move by the time the shows on Saturday were cancelled. Hmmm. Unless she’s a time traveller one of those days has to be a typo. Looks like they contacted her on Saturday and she caught the red-eye from JFK on Sunday. (Norwegian Air - which sounds like the Weissler’s all over; Grateful, but not enough to open the purse strings.) Nothing suspect there.

Looks like it was a Saturday PM flight arriving Sunday morning given she has posted about dinner in London on Sunday.

Yeah I thought she was saying she flew on Saturday as soon as she found out and all the flights I have been on from east coast to UK are overnight so I assumed she arrived on Sunday morning, slept, went for dinner and rehearsed on Monday.

I saw they flew her on Norwegian and that did make me chuckle a bit! 😆 (nothing against the airline btw, I’ve flown them a few times and like them!). Talking of the Weisslers, it was interesting when I read David’s insta post about his 6 week leave that he’s still being paid for it. Same I assume with Lucie. Sara can’t come cheap so I assume they must really be expecting a big uplift in ticket sales to cover all the costs and make extra profit out of it.

Maybe Lucie's away somewhere and has time to travel back for the evening. Can't see Sarah being well enough. Or they're pulling a classic Waitress and Sara happens to be in the UK already to make her early debut? If they’re getting Lucie to travel back (if she is on hol rather than sick) then shouldn’t they have cancelled her hol knowing Sarah was def sick, so they didn’t leave Olivia as the only Jenna? Or maybe Leanne will be doing it tonight but wasn’t to go on a such short notice! If Lucie has holiday booked or was away they cannot just order her to cancel it. There would be considerable cost and she could claim potential bullying.

I'm gagging at some of the responses - official or not this account is the most interesting thing that Waitress has had on social media. 😂 Cruel but funny.

That's modern day theatre, you are not allowed to show any kind of disappointment when things are cancelled or go wrong or you are descended upon by the super fans, many of whom live locally and who can travel in whenever they wish. If they were less entitled they'd realise not everyone has that luxury. Wouldn't a superfan be more disappointed but if they are local they'd clearly have less overhead costs to bear.

Desi was just amazing, better than any other Jenna we currently have imho. Go see her if you can, it's really a treat. 3 understudies on tonight (Nate for Ogie, Piers for Earl and Mark for Cal) and were all great, especially Nate as Ogie. Glad to report that the spark that the show had with the original cast has managed to come back, possibly thanks to Marisha's return and everyone's excitement about Desi. Olivia was back in the ensemble, I think there were one male short because of the covers so Leanne was also in, and was interesting to see it with an extra female.

Desi has posted on her IG stories that she isn't told whether or not she's playing Jenna until the morning of each performance so it seems there are no guarantees that she will be on all week despite that having been announced?! Peak Waitress.
