I need to give this a second watch, I was underwhelmed last night. Andrew Garfield was great but otherwise it didn't hold my attention and the songs didn't grab me either. I remember enjoying it live in London, maybe the film will click on second viewing.

I watched this and cried numerous during it. It started during the Sunday sequence. That number and the opening chords always gets me in SITPWG, so when it started I was welling up. When he bows to 'Dot' I could not stop the tears falling freely. The CGI is a bit dodgy, but i didn't care. numerous points after that also got me crying. Not entirely sure why it touched me so much. Maybe I just needed a cry, maybe there were parts that really resonated with me.
I thought this was such a beautifully done film. It was made with such passion and heart and reverence. Andrew Garfield seemed to capture Larson's energy perfectly and seeing the actual footage during the credits shows how good he was.
Loved all the references to rent, pretty sure I got most of them, but will be interesting to see the full list. The supporting cast were excellent and all the casting cameos were great. I'll need to go back to the musical theatre composers workshop, as i'm sure i missed a few there. Loved that Sondheim himself recorded the msg on the answering machine (cue more crying)

Loved it so much. Had seen it back at the Union in 2010 but this works so much better as a film - or rather, the direction and vision from Lin Manuel elevates this to new heights. Andrew Garfield is perfect. The Sunday sequence is so good I had to rewind and watch it again. I really hope this picks up some Oscar nominations.

I appreciate that by now many of us have seen this now either at the cinema or on Netfliks but if anyone can get to London and is interested att the British Film Institute (BFI) at Southbank they are screening this on 9th Dec at 8.30pm with a Q&A with director Lin-Manuel Miranda, actors Alexandra Shipp and Robin de Jesús and producer Julie Oh.
I just booked a ticket.
For those interested, my recommendation is to book quickly.

I’m not sure today was the day to watch this, but God it was good. So emotional with both the Sondheim news and my absolute devotion to Rent. What an absolute waste of a massive talent; if only someone had taken the time to diagnose his condition when he presented at hospital. The more I rediscover TTB the more these songs stand up just as well as Rent. Imagine what else he could have given us?

I watched this over the weekend and loved it! Amazing performance from Andrew Garfield, I hope he is recognised during awards season. The film was perfectly bookended by the two best songs. Excellent cast all round, special mention to Robin de Jesus as Michael. I’ll definitely be watching this again soon. 5⭐️ from me.
The CD soundtrack is listed on Amazon as being released on Friday for anyone interested.

Am I right in thinking that the narrative veers quite a long way from that of the musical as it was performed originally? ‘Real Life’ was always one of my favourites on the cd and is filleted to practically nothing in the film. Its like a whole new story has been created to turn it into the story of ‘Rent’ rather than its’ actual self? I really loved it but it wasn’t what I was expecting.

As fantastic as Garfield is in TTB, it struck me how diabolically wooden he was as Spiderman. He looks on the verge of tears throughout, and that’s even before he accidentally offs his girlfriend in the 2nd one. Thank heavens we have that little Billy Elliot now. Does a convincing US accent and isn’t too proud to do The One Show. Legend.

- was slightly bemused by his Spidey foray but he’s just iconic in this

I absolutely loved it. A beautiful piece of art.
I must say I am not a fan of Lin Manuel Miranda at all. Seems like a nice guy, but his acting, singing and composing are not suitable for professional projects in my opinion. However, clearly, when he is given someone else's material, performed by talent, he can be a magnificent director.
I really loved the direction, the respect and love for the story, the material and the illusion of sung thoughts was beautifully executed. Directing seems to be where his talent lies and I can't wait to see more of that.
2 of the highlights for me were the "Sunday" and "Swimming" scenes. Breathtaking, and in my top 10 of the better musical sequences on film ever. But the other scenes were outstanding as well.
As a whole, not as good as for example, West Side Story, but still very well done.
