Having just watched this at today’s matinee, it tells the story of the group of woman who formed the Women against Pit Closures and their fight against the pit closures of the 1980s and their sit in at the Parkside Pit.
Written by Maxine Peake, it is a very well written piece full of humour and brutal honesty of the impact of the miners strike both on those involved in the strike and on the wider communities.
At today’s matinee, the role r of one of the miners was taken at very short notice ( 15mins rehearsal time) by one of ensemble. Considering this, he gave a very assured performance and got a massive cheer at the end by the audience. So well done to that guy!
Overall, a very enjoyable afternoons entertainment and I would certainly recommend people to go and watch this.
It is nice to report that nobody had a cheeky look at their phones for the footie result during the performance!

Re the phones, I wish I could say the same for the chester Mystery Plays - and during the crucifixion of all moments, which must have been about 3.30. I'm afraid I was outraged.

Somehow I don’t think things are going to get any better now that England are in the semi finals. I think that this sort of behaviour will sadly continue to the end of the tournament. Being a theatre-goer in a World Cup year really does test your patience.

The real fans worked out when matches were and didn’t schedule anything that might clash. What you are getting are fair weather supporters who go around in a mist of ignorance.

Saw this tonight. I wasn’t at all familiar with the story going in - which I guess reflects the fact that the protest failed to raise the press coverage it wanted?
It could have done with some more laughs in the first act and a fewer speeches - quite a few left at the interval, which is a shame because it picked up considerably for the second act. It did fizzle out a bit at the end - despite the lift and lighting effects doing their best to provide a literally uplifting ending.
