Hmm, I'm not sold based on that first episode - cliched story, questionable acting and 75 minutes felt too long. I'm not going to be endeared to a bunch of characters who choose to desecrate a museum in the first ten minutes. I'll probably give it another episode or two but if I'm not sold by then, I'm out. For people who have seen the whole season, does it get better? Yes, I detested all the characters including Evan Peters' (although I think he's an excellent actor and this is the first time I've ever fast forwarded through one of his performances!)

The first episode was the toughest to get through when I watched it. However it really picks up from the second episode and it really does become standout TV imo.
Even though it’s a drama, I think it’s a fascinating look at what NYC was like for this group of people. A lot of cultural input came out of it and some we are yet to really grasp in the UK... and what we do, most are probably ignorant of its origins.
I appreciate some think it’s just a bunch of stereotypes - and in some ways it is - but I’d argue that these stereotypes do come from this moment in time and are rooted in truth. There’s plenty of media out there that demonstrates it - even mainstream stuff like Madonna’s ‘Truth or Dare/In Bed With Madonna’ has people picked right out of this environment.
What I liked though is that the stereotypes are explored and there’s a lot of character development over the first season. I’d really recommend sticking with it.
Also, as a show, I believe it has the largest cast of transgender actors too. So whilst it may have stereotypes, it is moving the goalpost in its own way in 2019.

One of Madonna’s dancers from the Truth or Dareerawas playing one of the ball judges. First one on the left in ep.1. Jose something.
I think what looked glaringly out the place was how clean and sparkly it all looks. I bet you could barely see the dance floor at those balls for weed and cigarette smoke. These were outsiders who had nothing and were trying to imitate lives that they saw on TV. I wanted it to look a bit dirtier.

It does get dirtier - it doesn't shy away from some of the harsh realities of the 1980s - even if other parts are more sanitised

Amazing news! I wonder who she’ll play? My guess is a teacher at the school.

From what people have said I will probably give the 2nd ep a go but the first ep didn’t grab me as much as I hoped it would. was def cliche at times and I thought some of the acting was pretty hammy.

I know it's a very long shot, but does anyone know what theatre was used to film the scenes where Damon goes to the ballet in ep.2? It looks so much nicer than any Broadway theatre I have been in!

Season 2 has started in the States.
Anyone else seen the first episode yet? I liked it, but the tone seemed all over the place and it felt very rushed. Pray Tell's sudden turn around to becomming an activist, and are we meant to believe that Electra had lived in Blanca's house for the past 3 years?? It seems like Electra is just a drama plot device rather than a proper character.
Still, the performances are great and i'm looking forward to whats comin next.

I loved this show though I found their season finale a bit of a letdown. Overall thought I found the show to be full of heart and empathy and wonderfully performed.

Yes I watched it last night and have the second ready to watch. It brought back memories for me of that time and the huge misunderstandings and terrible fears that were around and the early days of the activism. Billy Porter was dynamite I thought. I agree Electra is an odd character, she feels like she should be recurring rather than a regular and this on again/off again rivalry/friendship is tiresome and will get more so if they keep at it. But I do love the show, the music is enough for me!

Midway through the second series now and the episode I watched last night, No 4 Never Knew Love Like This Before was one of the finest hours of television I have ever watched. Superbly written, directed and acted especially by Angelica Ross. Deeply deeply moving and devastating that we still have the same things to deal with today. Highly recommended

For those watching season 2, episode 6 features Patti singing Sondheim (as well as outstanding performances from Billy P and Sandra B)

Late to the party for season 2. Episodes 1 to 4 great and yes I cried at E04.
But 5 and 6 (that’s where I am so far) leave me disappointed and a bit upset to be honest. Blatant, yes blatant shoehorning of Sandra Bernhardt and Patti Lupone into the storyline and to then have them both showing off and singing in front of an of audience AIDS patients. No.
I’m sure Ryan Murphy was loving it but that does not sit well with me.
