There seems to be a new unwritten rule that any major new British film with a part for a young woman has to feature Lily James - but why?
Don't know if I'm missing something (eg some well-known production in which she has appeared - I won't say "acted" - and which has been a success), but she was totally inappropriate for her role in Darkest Hour and is soon to be seen in the "Guernsey" (etc - I'm not writing all that!) film and ruining that, too. From what I have seen of her, she merely gurns and mugs and is quite unable to suggest any inner life or subtlety, so why is she apparently so popular?

Alas no, @theatremonkey - I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere but when it comes to seeing it, I appear to have a restricted view. Could you or someone else kindly enlighten me?

I think it's just her 'time' at the moment. It often happens. Julia Ormond back in the early 90s was a similar example where she was everywhere at once. Obviously being in one of the biggest TV shows of the last 10 years or so (I dont imagine you will have seen it showgirl) has helped Lily but she was also very good in the BBC's adaptation of 'Phwoar & Peace' and in the film 'Baby Driver'. I'm not sure I think she's a 'great' actress but I do think she's good in the right role and she is very attractive with a winning personality. She does have a pretty good theatre pedigree too.

I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere but when it comes to seeing it, Ryan makes this kind of thing look so easy... Let's try, "a lot of gents were sitting behind small pillars." "She got many tiny standing ovations." Please don't make me post a diagram. showgirl . We can all learn from Ryan, some might say he is the master- nevermind.

Ah, I see - thank you all for the explanations. Certainly doesn't sound like a case of mind over matter for some!
Interesting to hear about Ms J's theatrical work as I wasn't aware of this so am happy to take others' words for it that she performs better there. Still not looking forward to seeing her in the new film but maybe it's the direction at fault.

As the great Shakespeare once wrote, "Some are born to smut, some achieve innuendo, and some have campness thrust upon them".
Rarely someone comes along with all those attributes coupled with complete modesty and humility. I am one of those people. It's a gift.

And don't leave out the fine physical attributes with which you are blessed like a fair countenance, a graceful figure and a charming manner. Well, that's what I gather from your posts, anyway, Ryan. I am so envious...!

Are we really now having threads started just so people can be mean about actors they don’t like?
*sigh*
If we’re going to have this sort of thing, can’t we keep it within the ‘performers’ section?

That’s why I’d rather it stayed tucked away in performers, where it’s easier to avoid. Let’s face it, we all have someone we dislike - if we all start a thread in General Chat to bitch about them it’ll become thoroughly depressing in no time at all.

Apologies to the above posters, firstly as I didn't realise there was a "Performers" section and secondly if you think I was just being "mean" about Ms J. I did say it was my opinion and as I clearly have no knowledge of her as a person so neither like nor dislike her, it was her acting ability I was questioning, which I think is relevant, and in relation to films which have been/will be discussed in this thread.
I will bear your comments in mind in future but while we are on the subject of what may or not be personal remarks about actors, and though two wrongs don't make a right, what about all the frankly lewd and salacious posts about (mainly) male actors on play-specific threads? I really don't want to read anything about actors' bodies or parts thereof; I'd like to know whether the production overall, and, if appropriate, individual cast members, were good or otherwise.
Ultimately however it's for the Mods so I will leave it to them.

Really, you’re going with that argument in a thread where the answer to ‘why is Lily James successful?’ is ‘lots of men get erections watching her’?

Really, you’re going with that argument in a thread where the answer to ‘why is Lily James successful?’ is ‘lots of men get erections watching her’? 😂😂 That wasn't "the answer", just "an answer", and not a very convincing one. What I was really thinking about was the rather creepy drooling we get on here from some female posters about the red-haired usher at the Almedia which would be modded immediately if the genders were reversed. Maybe they'd like to answer that, possibly try the argument "Well women have had to put up with that for years so it is good to redress the balance" ?

People appreciate beauty in the the human form on here whichever way it attracts them. Some people may find this wrong but would you rather be called beautiful or ugly just ask Wayne Rooney.
Today it almost seems that women can ogle a bloke on TV not the other way round. Recently on Loose Women they had Kelly Brook who only ever found fame for two reasons showing a photo of her new beau topless and the middle aged women were lusting over him. If it had been a bunch of guys going off about Kelly Brook's chest no doubt there would be complaints.
I always took the view that it was best to quietly admire. There was a story a few years back on The Voice where Danny from The Script said to Sir Tom Jones that Holly Willoughby was looking good and Tom replied "I know!".
Anyway back to Lily she could well be the breakout female star from Downton.

There was an interview with her in the Times last weekend. The quote they lifted and put in the headline was “If I want to play a stripper I’ll play a stripper”. In the football world that would be called a “come and get me plea” - I expect Hollywood will take note.
