The pranksters have managed to full off the impossible and make this production of Follies a lot more interesting then it actually is

Read the report earlier. Is there no CCTV at the NT? Surely one of the cams would have picked them put wandering around the place. I think the security guards need to be asked some serious questions.

Ergh. It makes all the rigourous bag-checking and closing of various entrances seem a bit redundant if it was this easy to gain access to the theatre.

I went to a Follies talk earlier this week. Yes it was just a talk not the actual production but it was held in the auditorium and no bag checks were made at all that I could see.

I'm mostly feeling utter fury at them. Yes, there's a snobby part of me that thinks "how dare they, don't they have ANY respect for our National Theatre" (and is also fairly contemptuous at how impressed they are at being able to see the London Eye, like it's not a highly visible landmark right in the centre of London, such tourists), but there's also a fairly sensible part that is angry they felt the need to climb all over the place like monkeys when a) there are staircases and b) if one of them had died, that would have had SERIOUS consequences for the theatre. I'm already worried about the consequences for the featured security guard who, yes, really should have been more rigorous when checking these guys had a right to be there (I know there are hundreds of employees at the NT but I'm pretty certain they all have staff passes) but who wouldn't have had to be in that situation if these idiots hadn't decided it was cool to trespass.
But I'm not going to lie, there is a part of me that appreciated getting a look into the Olivier flies. It's all well and good being told they could comfortably hang a double-decker bus over the stage, but the different vantage point was *whispers* kinda cool.

I was banned from putting a post on this yesterday by TM, apparently due to "legal action"?
Makes a complete mockery of their bag searches indeed. And they have doors aplenty open all over the place elsewhere too.
Hopefully it's a wake up call.

Am Ithe only one who has never been bag searched at the National? I always take my shoulder bag, never have even been approached to be searched.

I'm not seeing the "prank" aspect. This is just trespassing and wandering around. If this is a prank then the bar is set pretty low.

The theatre was built before the need for stringent security with so many entrances. The last time I visited the NT (Follies) I was astonished that there were rigorous bag checks at the main entrance but people were ascending the internal staircases from the car park completely unchecked!

My biggest concern was what might have been dislodged in their stupidity that could have then fallen in a subsequent performance - hopefully the NT did a thorough check of everything before the next performance. Could have been catastrophic.
Sadly their antics will only encourage others to go one step further.

What annoyed me most was that they had the audacity to actual climb on and explore the staircase aspect of the set for Follies. Had something significant been broken, what would have happened to upcoming performances? Who would have paid for set damages? Would NT be compensated for lost revenue? I’m amazed, especially as the YouTube account is verified, that google allow videos like this to be made continually which surely only promotes more incidents of tresspassing and risk of damage to the self and the property of others.

An adventurous bit of urban exploring that harmed no-one, and highlighted security flaws that can now be closed, making us all safer in the future. Natural human curiousity and playfulness.

Who would have paid for set damages? Insurance.

I have watched a lot of those mildly similar urban exploration videos, where people explore areas of interest (usually by climbing their way in) the public are not allowed into. I find them entertaining and often revealing, albeit it’s something I’d never do. I’d be hypocritical if I therefore criticised this. It’s illegal, it’s a bit morally wrong, but it’s not the end of the world. Certainly there’s a lot of appetite for this sort of thing.
As a side note, I’d love it if the NT did an extreme backstage tour. It’s nice the one they have, but I want to go everywhere, I want to see everything. It should be 3 hours long. You should have to climb up ladders and get to spin inside the drum revolve.

If this was people free-running across the NT building or some inner city urban landscape and risking falling and breaking their necks people would be saying it was amazing.
Because they actually got inside the National Theatre, the same people are up in arms. “Ooh what if they make some scenery fall!”.
The NT is not sacrosanct. I think people should stop focusing on the pranksters (young idiots but nothing new) and Google and instead direct their wrath at the NT for having such pathetic security.

It’s not like going into an abandoned building, there’s a lot of equipment that people rely on to be safe and not messed with. It’s a working space. I presume that the NT will press charges, given the potential endangerment of its employees, a crime is still a crime.

Oh come now, given the chance we'd all have done it.
If I'd have got in I'd have been up and down that staircase like Bette Midler in 'Hello, Dolly!'.
Well that and leaving a piece of fish behind the radiator in the office of my nemesis, Rufus.

Wish I had been there - urban exploring for theatre-lovers. Do I think it's a particularly rational thing to do? No. Would I do it given a chance? In a heartbeat. I just wouldn't post a public account of it as getting security people in trouble is not OK. But I do love this part:

I was banned from putting a post on this yesterday by TM, apparently due to "legal action"? No, you were NOT "banned" by me. As a member of the admin team, I happened to be first to see your post and had to take action, as any other member would. At that point, the story was developing, and your link was moved to the discussion board's "backstage" area so that the admin team could review whether it would be OK to run it. As you well know, you were told that, accepted it, and it is utterly unacceptable to make out that any banning took place. It was just that members of the team needed to check things out. It would have been restored, also as you know, but you chose to do so yourself. I think an apology is in order, don't you? No apology required by me TM. You said it was removed as it was part of an "ongoing investigation" and the "legality" was being discussed. Why, when all the major news outlets. And even Whatsonstage had reported it publicly. And here, for some assistance: ban1 ban/ verb past tense: banned; past participle: banned officially or legally prohibit (something). You cannot deny the post was banned.

I have watched this guys videos for a while now and he has 'broken into' so many places and has never been charged or had anything drastic happen to him so the authorities don't seem to care other than chucking them out or releasing them soon after arrest. It's a civil matter and isn't as easy to charge as most may think.
I agree with a previous person that it is more an issue with the NT security rather than the person who is a curious person who takes opportunities to film videos knowing how lousy security actually is in this country.
I secretly loved seeing the backstage of Follies lol yes he is a stupid guy for hanging from a pole 4 floors up and lying when being confronted by security but it also shows that security isn't as good as people like to make it out as nowadays.
