Thanks for that, I agree the SOLT seem to be as consistent as quicksand. So it would suggest that, the Olivier committee deemed that year (2002), the 3 musicals were unworthy of winning best musical, which is preposterous as the award should go to the best musical regardless. it is poor show that a award wasn't made and just make the Olivier even more laughable and proves the committee is up themselves. Other bizarre decisions: Cancelling the Olivier Awards in 1989 because of the death of Lawrence Olivier. Bestowing an award on the whole cast of Kat and Kings. some strange winners in the past for best musical, such as Honk, Kat and the Kings and Once Upon the Island. The whole cast of Kat & the Kings were brilliant, what didn't you like about it? Honk was a strange one but Once Upon This Island was a great show.

Censorship? Or just for time? What have you heard was censored? The phrase "Uncastrated manly countertenors" in Iestyn Davies's speech introducing Farinelli (I personally don't see anything worth editing out either for time or censorship - I thought it was a fab joke!)) I haven't seen the ITV version, this came from the man himself but - can anyone confirm please?

It wasn't in the intro shown in the full-length broadcast but it didn't look like any cuts had been made (single shot) - maybe he meant that he was told beforehand he wasn't allowed to use it.

The awards show broadcast on TV on Sunday night was weakly compered and much of it rather flat. I don't think that an even bigger venue, at the Royal Albert Hall next year, is what has been missing so far.
Years ago, the South Bank Show awards were set in a fairly low-capacity venue, yet the relative intimacy of it all made it more of an event. Or did it need to be better lit than it was last Sunday? Whatever, it requires more thought and self-criticism before next year's awards night comes along.

But he did use it! (I was watching YouTube version avail internationally). Here is the link to the bit as I've heard it:

Was so surprised at the win of David Bedella, I did not like his performance one bit! His acting was mediocre, his singing was poor and he was just irritating. Am I just missing something? Did I catch him on an off-night? I really thought Joe Aaron Ried, from In the Heights, was so much better than Bedella and would've deserved the award more.

While I am completely confused as to why he was nominated, David Bedella was singing and acting fine when I saw him.

David Bedella was far superior to his Broadway counterpart, I can assure you. I've seen some comments on American boards wondering how THIS role could produce an award winning performance. Bedella found something in it no one else has found.

Crazy to cut that part of Davies' intro! I heard it on the radio and thought it was very funny. He was clearly joking...

Bedella found something in it no one else has found. Or he was the biggest name in the show, and for some reason they decided to reward it.

That makes sense about Bedella, we all have our off-days!

Thanks for posting that - yep, it was cut from the ITV3 broadcast - in the broadcast his speech ended after "enjoyed full houses". Bizarre given that the programme wasn't cut for time.

I have just caught up on the "full" broadcast, so I've now seen some of the bits cut from the highlights. I thought the Bend It performance was truly awful, and really did the show no favours (and I quite liked it!) I can only assume that they couldn't muster enough of the disbanded cast for a full number that would have represented the show better. In that respect 7BF7B put them to shame; that was lovely. Although I think the choreography in the recent UK tour was a bit more exciting. I had forgotten the Bugsy performance - I thought that a bit disappointing, as was the only other clip I've seen on TV (Sunday at the Palladium, or something.) - I haven't seen it live. I loved the Mischief Comedy guys presenting the "Award for best performance in a sequel". If you were fast forwarding through the show and missed it, see here:

I'm very confused about Mark Shenton claiming that ITV/the Oliviers didn't broadcast the Bend It Like Beckham performance because they didn't want to show diversity, despite the fact that they showed the In the Heights performance and almost every other musical performance featured a person of colour. Think he needs to accept the fact that it's because the show has closed and he was one of the few people that was upset that it did.

He annoys me so much because his views are so opinionated and he will make yku believe what he thinks. Considering the Oliviers did show diversity (with nominees, winners and performers), he needs to face the fact that the show has closed and was quite naff and just because he thought it was the best doesn't mean we have to think the same too!!

Bend It Like Beckham should of picked a better song, it really did the show no favours. I would of thought they should of done Glorious or something to showcase Natalie. As for Henderson, it is the best song in the show and the only one that could of worked out of context and it showcased the two actresses so I am not surprised they chose it and it was possibly the best choice.

I loved the Mrs. Henderson Presents performance and after watching it I am quite tempted to get day seats. I thought Emma William's voice was stunning!
