Does sound good but putting it on sale a year in advance is ludicrous. (says the person who just booked for the Ring Cycle next October, but that's different probably)

So..... the first four productions to go on sale at this theatre all have male writers and male directors. I'm definitely going to book this, I do maintain a dark fondness for The Pillowman, but I will be raising disappointed eyebrows at the Nicks for their lack of having female creatives lined up ready to go for the first season. They must know how this looks in 2017? Hope the rest of the forthcoming summer season starts to make up for it!

This sounds awesome! I like the sound of a lot of the Bridge's new writing. The Barnet Norris (Nightfall), Nina Raine (untitled about Bach) and John Hodge (Flatpack) and Lucinda Coxon plays sound good too. It could become my new favourite venue and I haven't even been yet!

McDonagh has certainly been busy recently, what with Hangmen, Three Billboards... and this in the space of two years, following the long gap after Seven Psychopaths: I'll wait to see what availability is like next year, I have no intention of booking for anything so far in advance.

Also keeps traffic flowing to the website and therefore presumably nudges people who haven't booked for other things yet to do so. Not a bad plan!

Do you think though, the way to send a message to Nicky x2 is by not booking for these productions at his shiny new theatre until they address the gender imbalance? If more people don't book and they also send them messages via social media to explain why they haven't booked, surely lots of empty seats will encourage them to do something about it. If they put on a season of productions lacking female creatives and yet people still go to see them it doesn't really give them any incentive to change does it? If they won't do it willingly because they think it's right, perhaps they need to be hit where it hurts. In the pocket.

Sort of an awkward seesaw really; I'd rather reward them for employing women than punish them for employing men, and if the theatre goes out of business all together, they'd be more likely to blame it on the location or the fact it was a risky business venture than wonder if all those people howling about the lack of female representation maybe had a point after all. So I'll book cheapies for the men, increase my per-ticket spend for ladies (should they get any), and keep howling from dawn 'til dusk.

Nick Hytner said in a recent interview that the Bridge Theatre isn't doing seasons. They are programming show-by-show and opening booking as appropriate. So they initially put the first three shows on sale together because they used the three configurations of this flexible theatre: End-On (Young Marx), Promenade (Julius Caesar) and Thrust (Nightfall). Of those two, Nicholas Hytner is directing the first two himself, which is surely an understandable decision for an Artistic Director. It seems a little unreasonable to expect him to undergo a sex change between these two shows in order to achieve short-term gender parity. The first visiting director is male. We don't yet know anything at all about the possible second visiting director of the next show (July to September 2018). Then we have a male director of today's announced play.

I think I read that they are programming plays as they become ready - but the initial announcement did have a good level of female writers so hopefully the whole is going to look more balanced. Nick H is talking a good talk about proper female representation so I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Fairy nuff. I'll give Nicky x2 the benefit of the doubt before I go all Emmeline Pankhurst on them. Well actually I just want to wear a big hat and wave a placard around demanding more female creatives and more male nudity in the vain hope that they'll give me some free madeleines to shut me up but every little bit of action helps I'm sure. Votes for Women!

For The Bridge to get a new McDonagh play is a coup especially as his wattage is only going to increase thanks to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.
