So last night fellow board member Anniek and I attended the Theatre Cafe Stagey Quiz, hosted by actor Keiron Brown.
Our team The Quizzers and I (see what I did there?-Thank you) did extremely well but alas, it is with heavy heart that I announce that it wasn't quite good enough.
Despite winning by quite a significant margin last years, this time we came second.
We were able to answer most questions with confidence.
There were twelve heavily pixelated theatre images and we worked out 11 of them.
In the King and I we knew that he was the monarch of which country?
Which war was South Pacific set during?
We knew the lyrics for 'Popular'
We also knew which Broadway star appeared in the original production of Les Miserables.
Speaking of Broadway, we knew which show Ricky Martin appeared in
The profession of the three male leads in On The Town
Which actress was Indina Menzel's understudy on Broadway
Also who has played the role of Elphaba the longest?
And in the show what exactly what La Cage aux Follies is?
And which X-Factor winner appeared on Broadway?
To list just a few questions from memory.
We were even able to list the names of all of the Von Trapp children in order- Leisel, Fredrick, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta and Gretel can managed to get moist of their ages-we all know Liesel was sixteen, going on seventeen, that Marta was seven and Gretel was five.
What got us in the end was how friggin' colours did Joesph have in his multi-coloured dream coat? List all of the colours in order
We've decided that next year we're going to be call ourselves F**cking Joseph!

I know all of the Joseph coat colours, and in order Well don't keep us in suspenders, lad, we may need them for next time. So: Red, yellow... It’s red and yellow, actually... You have to keep adding ‘and’... 29? Second place is good. It’s not the winning but the taking part. (Whoever said that load of bollocks was a fibber!)

List all of the colours in order My single stage performance (that I remember) was as Dan in Joseph at school - and after "Red and Yellow...." I just mumbled!

Cool. TBH I never liked the place. The energy there always seemed off. I'd very much rather hang out at the West End Leon instead. Might try Theatre Cafe again on a double show day.

The Theatre Cafe is a smallish space but last night is was at capacity. (Ideally) They prefer at least the people as a minimum per team but last night there were at lease two teams of two. We were a team of three.
A very relaxed vibe with people of all ages and an even balance of males to females.
All questions were (obviously) theatre related and although most of the questions tend to refer to musicals, there were some about plays as well.

Off topic a bit (apologies) but I'm confused about recent use of the disparaging term stagey (meaning fake and lacking in truth), is it an attempt to reclaim it as a positive term?

I've never seen 'stagey' defined that way. The usual definition is theatrical/exaggerated. Obviously we don't view 'theatrical' as a bad thing around these parts!

It is used a lot as an insult though; just a quick glance at definitions and it come up with 'unnaturally showy', 'sensationalised', 'melodramatic', 'overdone', 'artificial and mannered'.
As I say, I thought there must be a knowingness in its usage to twist its usual meaning around.

Yes I think the more recent usage is intended to mean obsessed with theatre... for example I'm so stagey, when a documentary narrator mentioned that "Brazil is famous for its production of oranges & lemons", my first thought was "Ooh I've never heard of that musical".
