After the Crucible could we...not Seriously... They'd have to rename it The Backs of the Witches... If she could just direct it for the space she's in I'd have less of a problem but she seemed to believe The Crucible was in the Lyttleton, not the Olivier...

Seriously... They'd have to rename it The Backs of the Witches... If she could just direct it for the space she's in I'd have less of a problem but she seemed to believe The Crucible was in the Lyttleton, not the Olivier... I sat with gritted teeth for 3 hours the first time I saw it. The 2nd time I left at interval. The whole centre of the stage was empty, why did they need to stand with their backs to the audience? Atrocious x

Oh that's fabulous casting!
From the article: The cast also includes Daniel Rigby, Julie Armstrong, Chrissie Bhima, Zoe Burkett, Daniele Coombe, Molly-May Gardiner, Tiffany Graves, Tania Mathurin, Jacob Maynard, Laura Medforth and Ben Redfern.

Daniel Rigby as well. Hope he can fit that Death of an Anarchist transfer in first!

Lots of familiar names in the cast, and a renowned creative team. Katherine Kimgsley will be wonderful!

I can't tell from the marketing whether this is only for kids. Will there be anything in it for adults?

David Wood of course did an adaptation of The Witches 30 years ago and it had at least two London productions.
I dunno. The NT used to do the occasional musical but they now seem to be taking up a lot of the programming or scheduling. This year we will have had Hex, Standing at the Sky's Edge, The Witches and Strange Loop (albeit at The Barbican).

The Deadline article suggests that they won't be playing down the darker parts of the story and that it's not going to be suitable for kids under 8. So yes it will probably satisfy adults as well as older kids.

It's the National Theatre not the national playhouse. So really they should be showing a variety of forms of theatre and not just plays.

Of course, that's why they started doing the occasional one 40 years ago. But the point of the subsidy is so they don't need to be overly commercial.
Plays can equally make a lot of money if successful. Amadeus, War Horse, One Man Two Guvnors, A Chorus of Disapproval are just four NT plays that made them a fortune.
I think two musicals in a twelve month period is sufficient when London already has more musicals than plays.
No, I'm not David Hare...

The NT subsidy has recently been reduced so they need to fill the coffers somehow.

It's the first time a Dave Malloy musical has premiered in the U.K, that alone means there shouldn't be a single complaint.

I trust Rufus and Tanya did all their work on Hex for free, to help out...
Maybe the NT should just go profit share...

They did say one musical a year. I guess Hex not officially opening in 2021 and coming back proper in 2022 means technically, it’s still one a year. I wouldn’t count Strange Loop, it’s got many many producers.

Yeah I'd argue it's one a year too still - ASL they are co producing not at their venue and none of their team are directing.
Surprised this is in the Olivier and not the Lyttleton but I guess it's the biggest house and probably their most commercial show.
At least it's a solid creative team - I'm not a Lyndsey Turner fan but having Stephen Meat and Nigel Lilley gives me hope!

Would it be foolish to hope that the drum revolve could finally reappear for this? Or is it now completely out of action? Any experts around?

More info on the David Wood adaptation on www.davidwood.org.uk/plays/plays_the_witches.htmI also remember there was a production one Christmas at Birmingham Rep which then toured and did a West End run (think it was Ruby Wax as the Grand High Witch?), also there was another production at the Curve, Leicester a few years ago which I think toured as well.

I remember seeing the original film where Angelica Houston plated the Grand High With.
To this day I have never forgotten it. Especially the little girl who went missing and ended up in the painting.
And the fact that all of the Witches are bald, with itchy scalps and wear wigs.
They also gave no toes and wear shoes squared off at the front.
But that little girl in the painting.....
I never saw the remake with Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer

I agree, completely horrific. I still think about the girl, and the witch who pushed that pram down the cliff hill.

I never saw the remake with Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer It's the horrified face of the father as he walks towards the painting that always used to get me. Oh and "she can't HEAR you!" said by the witch with the snake when Luke is calling out for his granny from the treehouse.

And the fact that throughout the years the girl keeps moving position in the painting, getting older, and whenever the Grand High Witch taps the painting, there a little yelp till eventually the little girl is no more.
