So this show really is smashing it to the extreme. I'm stunned. I really thought this would be one of those movie/musical adaptations that wouldn't survive very long, and when the reviews came out I was expecting it to be gone by now. But bar the first week with only two performances, it's consistently done well over a million a week!
I wonder where this will leave it come the Tony Awards? If it keeps going how it is, I can see it going either for several catagories or completely shut out. But based on word of mouth and what I've seen, I can see Andy, Samantha, Orfeh and Eric getting nominations, as well as a Costume nomination, especially for some of her costumes, which are fabulous! I don't think it will get a Musical nomination however, just because of the reviews.

Musical options on Broadway are pretty slim right now, so I think that is part of the unexpected success. How long it will continue remains to be seen though. A known name/story like this makes it an easy option for people unimpressed with what else is available.

I saw this last night. I have absolutely no luck with seeing Sam Barks (she was out when I saw Les Mis and The Last Five Years!) and that rotten luck continued as she'd called out sick. So I was very glad I hadn't done a very early rush queue - I arrived about 9.10 and that was plenty of time to get a good seat on the centre aisle of one of the side blocks. Good view once I'd found a booster seat, and actually the sides of the front row seemed better than the centre.
The show itself is nothing to write home about - yes, the "down on her luck woman gets rescued by rich man" story is slightly questionable in this day and age, but it is what it is given it's a famous film. The Bryan Adams score is fine but forgettable. The ensemble are pretty good, and the opera scene is very well done (best thing about the show really).
Barks' understudy, Jilllian Mueller, was very good despite a couple of flubs on tongue-twisty lines. The Playbill seemed to suggest she is the second understudy so not sure if it was her first time on (though aside from those couple of stumbles you wouldn't have been able to tell she wasn't the regular lead) - I was chatting to the house manager and he said Barks had called out at the last minute for the matinee and was supposed to be back for the evening but then they had to move people around at the last minute when it became clear she wouldn't be in. Andy Karl was fine though nothing special on the acting front, and similarly Orfeh can certainly sing but her acting left a lot to be desired - her expression barely changed and her forehead didn't move as far as I could see for the entire show.
It's clearly trying to be the new Legally Blonde, but it isn't as funny or as clever as that show. It is fine light entertainment and a fun enough way to pass an evening, but I wouldn't need to see it again even if Barks is back tomorrow (I could squeeze in a matinee before my flight).

I agree with everything Poster J has said about the show. I saw this at the beginning of November - Samantha Barks was on, but Andy Karl was off (and his understudy looked too young to be convincing as Edward).
I enjoyed the show - it was a nice night at the theatre, having only paid $42 for front row centre rush tickets (I also arrived at the theatre just after 9am on a Friday, and was third in line). But I wouldn't hurry back to see it again, and am glad I didn't pay full price for the tickets over other shows currently on Broadway.
The music is very Bryan Adams. I had listened to the cast recording before seeing it, and I agree with what previous people have said about it being like one long track. But in the live show there is a lot of dialogue to seperate the songs, and it's easier to listen to when you have something to watch. My biggest issue was the lyrics, which are quite basic and predictable at times. But it was fine.
I assume the popularity of this show is due to it being "Pretty Woman". The lady behind me was reciting all the big lines from the film (often incorrectly) before the actors said them. So I suspect it will have a good run on Broadway, and around the world.

Pretty Woman is now heading toward a million every week (bar the first with just two performances) since opening. And with Christmas coming up, it will likely be January if any for grosses to head below the million mark, if at all in the near future. Amazing considering the reviews, am really happy for all involved!  |

I notice ATG is one of the producers of Pretty Woman so perhaps it could end up in one of their theatres? Perhaps the Piccadilly in late 2019 or early 2020

There are enough crazy Pascal fans that it'll give them a small boost in January. And I can't see how this ISN'T foreshadowing of Pascal either replacing Karl or heading the tour (maybe both).

It doesn't need a sales boost, it's been grossing upwards of $1m per week. I presume they are just lining things up for whenever Andy Karl decides to leave. |

I've already heard (anecdotally, of course) that people who were on the fence before are planning to go now. I imagine the old-school Rentheads currently in their 30s and 40s who didn't care before might care in January (traditionally a terrible-selling month)!

That aside Adam is infamously now the leading man they bring in to close a show...so maybe not this time (to paraphrase another show he closed) but maybe later down the line. My honest take is that yes January is a slow month, why not boost sales when your leading man is off?
But damn Pretty Woman and Adam Pascal that is my JAM.

Same here, this Renthead now in her 40s almost had a heart attack at the very prospect of being able to see Mr Pascal when I'm in New York in April. Were I there in January, I'd most definitely go. Here's hoping Mr Karl needs another holiday in the last week of April. Ahem.

i will wait who they cast in the 2 lead roles and then maybe book a ticket - i am in Hamburg lots of times anyway because of Paramour, so maybe

Yeah I was surprised - and that's just the Ticketmaster allocation- but I did think it's a slow time of year. It's NYC theatre week when I'm there and they go on sale on Wednesday so going to hold off for that beofre I book as shows on 241 so hoping to get a deal! |

I'm not too surprised, I checked the seating plan a few weeks before I went in November (I ended up day seating rather than booking) and there were loads of seats available at that point, but it was full on the night. Granted, I don't know how much papering goes on in NY, but given it was grossing $1m+ per week at the time it can't have been that much |

Fell below a million for the first time since the first week, at $940,504. Not a bad amount by any stretch of the imagination and it won't go anywhere at all, but clearly the January bug has hit the box office with this one.
