Well at least Mary Berry's wardrobe is being put to good use by Noel. Not that I watched it of course.

Really wouldn't surprise me if Fielding was quietly ditched before any future series. He isn't bringing anything to the tent.
Some pretty shoddy baking today. Biscuit week shouldn't be that challenging unless the ovens are dodgy

I have a colleague who went to this week's recording for An Extra Slice, which included watching tonight's show beforehand. Although she didn't tell me who went (some sort of official secrets' act was signed) and I wouldn't have asked anyway, I do have a teeny little spoilerette for tonight. So do not click if you do not want a hint as to who left. Apparently, tonight you will need tissues

Noel can go at the end of the season, I have warmed to Sandi, but not him. He’s humour attempts are so flat. It’s as if they’ve told him to channel Mel and Sue, it just doesn’t work.

I disagree i love Noel and Sandi together. Pru needs to go and Paul needs to realise its not his show just because Mary iant around anymore

Wasn't before but she is good.
Been watching one of the first series of GBBO on UK cookery gold. Spoiler Alert. Paul and Mary have both aged in reverse. Paul isn't orange yet and Mary has loads more wrinkles. Both look at least ten years younger at BBC's end. And the cookery isn't as consistently good in early series.

Can’t stand that Sophie. Smug or what. The other woman is dead sloppy, can’t see how she’s scraped into the final. Steven to win!

Loved the panning to Stacey last night, every time someone else had good feedback - you could just sense the "damn, I want to kill you" coming from her.

He genuinely hates it if others get great feedback - you can see it all over his boat race. I was hoping he would go this week as he has been getting progressively more arrogant and peacocky as the weeks go by.

So Stacey ‘just’ did a couple of pink birds or whatever Hollywood said but what about the messy rainbow which was all there was there. Both tasted ok. And the tutu was totally cracked so why didn’t hollywood pick up on that? Weird judging and the comment about having to look back to what they had done in the past was a teensy bit dodgey as if they had put it in after the edit to explain why they were keeping Stephen but correct me if I am wrong the judging is in the ‘you are as good as your last cake’ basis no? Well obviously no. So in Strictly what if they kept in a celeb cos she did a nice waltz in week 1 even though she did a poor foxtrot in week 5? I’m just surmising. They don’t do that and it means you have to perform every time. You don’t award the grand national to a horse that won every time but not this time do you? I’m just putting this out there as my logic might be all over the place. But I just felt that Stacey was hard done by and the finalists were pre ordained

I would personally favour a radical rejig of the format - with a series of two halves. The first would be on the basics: Bread, Pastry, Cake, Biscuits - with the contestants all being ranked on a leaderboard (and no weekly elimination). Then only the top 5 or 6 bakers would proceed through to the second half - with the more technical/themed weeks. At this stage you would go to a weekly elimination heading towards the final.
That way, you would test them all on core technique and really see who can cut it - rather than someone who is great at Bread, Pastry and Cake but who is weaker on Biscuits being eliminated due to one limitation.
Would this make for good television? Done well, yes. Would it make for higher standards and a fairer outcome? Absolutely.

I’m just putting this out there as my logic might be all over the place. But I just felt that Stacey was hard done by and the finalists were pre ordained I see what you mean lynette but I think it's just different rules for different shows. Strictly make it clear that the dance off is to be judged on that particular performance and nothing else - presumably the 'nothing else' encompasses popularity and entertainment value which the audience at home take care of when they vote to keep people in! I remember at least 1 or 2 occasions on previous Bake Off's on BBC1 where Paul and Mary (more so Paul) talked about having to refer back to previous bakes to make a decision on who should go home so last night wasn't the first time. Also editing will play a huge part in how we view it. Most of the time over the 8 series', it's been pretty obvious who will go but I'm sure on the odd occasion it's been a surprise, it wouldn't shock me too much if the judges regretted some of them. It's a decision they have to make there and then, whatever is in their mind at the time. Maybe sometimes the decision is wrong, but that can only be down to gut feeling and human error. No opportunity to watch the series so far on catch up, or watch this weeks episode again on +1 to make sure they didn't miss anything. And in the Grand National, it's a sprint to the finish line and whoever passes the line first wins, it's not really comparable to Bake Off so that's the only logic I don't get. I also don't see what Bake Off would gain from predetermining their finalists but that usually is the first port of call for fans when a result doesn't go they way they hoped! I jest, of course!

Bake Off in general takes a more 'cumulative' approach even just on the show/day- as in it's all the bakes that day not just the showstopper than always get taken into consideration. And I've no 'evidence' for it other than a memory of it, but I'm sure Mary and Paul have made several comments on the lines of 'a more consistent baker overall' 'has been consistently good' over the years. And it is of course more heavily edited than Strictly so we don't get all the judges comments/get what the producers want us to see!

Of course what is amusing is that we accept the 'marking' which involves no actual marks for this and other cookery shows but scrutinise the marking for Strictly (and I suppose X factor but I don’t watch that.) and we scrutinise academic results to the point that kids can say they were one mark off a top grade. If marks were awarded for Bake Off would the results be different? Again, just putting it out there.

I think marking each Bake could be an interesting approach- that way there would be a real sense of who is 'in trouble' by the showstopper etc. Could make for 'exciting' TV too, if we're inclined to spice up our cakes!

Can’t stand that Sophie. Smug or what. Ugh. She is everything that reminds me of totally inadequate feelings in the primary school playground when picking up my kids. There were millions of her all over the place. Smugness for England. I couldn't get out of there quickly enough. She brings back all those memories. Stacey should have gone in week 1. So even though Steven had a bad one, she totally deserved to go. At least he tried something difficult. Her stooopid flamingoes could be done in school cookery classes. Liam to win.......

The news of Stacey's homelife came as a big of a surprise today. Given the nature of the competition, it is inevitable that many of the contestants come from financially stable backgrounds. Who else has the time and money to put in the hours of recipe testing necessary to succeed?
But to discover that she is married to the multi-millionaire co-founder of ASOS takes things to quite a different level.
Sophie was extra smug when talking about her 20 years of ballet training. She probably had a pony as well.

Publicly, I am boycotting the new version, but of course I'll have a look!!! The three magic ingredients have gone though, Mary with Paul was good symmetry and of course Mel and Sue were an excellent combination. It will be interesting to see if Noel and Sandi can find that sense of mischief. Will Prue Leith have symmetry with Paul? I can't see it because when she has been a judge on other things, she is quite abrasive. Of course it will be more important than ever to have a group of engaging cooks. Oh, it's all to play for!!!!

Oh Steven. That was yours to lose. A bit sad. Not keen on Smugphie. But she was the best on the day. Kate did well too. But I love the idea of a Steven and Sophie holiday and the Yan/Julia/Flo car karaoke should be made into a new series!

But I love the idea of a Steven and Sophie holiday and the Yan/Julia/Flo car karaoke should be made into a new series! Steven was the worst odds on favourite I've seen for awhile. Back against that all day. Sophie was the best. And amazing how many times this series Kate was the second worst in the week

Boy did Steven really muck that up for himself! Sad as has been mentioned above, was sure he'd win. Kate started well but even though the winner was to be judged on showstopper alone, it just wouldn't have been right for her to win based on the series. Though I did think she'd just clinch it after a pretty great showstopper, but with the events of the episode, I was pleased to see Sophie crowned winner as that really was the right choice on the day. Bring on series 9!!!
