Well. US military veterans get a dedication before the show starts and a round of applause which is nice.
Lovely set and a show that was much darker than I thought it was going to be. Of course there are some lighter moments and the romance between Donny and Julia is very well done but it doesn't shy away from throwing rather a lot of lump-in-the-throat moments into it. It's also got a real heart and warmth to it which I just wasn't expecting.
On top of all that you get Corey Cott in a vest several times and when he isn't, he is literally squeezed into some of the tightest shirts imaginable. All of which were very warmly received at my end. So to speak.
The cast are AMAZING. They also play their own instruments we are reliably informed by the announcement at the beginning and this includes Laura Osnes on the ukulele. Rather like 'School of Rock' but with a bit of war thrown in. The choreography Tony was well deserved but Corey Cott was robbed of a Best Actor nomination. Despite being very easy on the eye, he puts in a wonderful performance of a man who isn't likeable all the time and is haunted by his war experience. He gets to cry and everything. 'Gigi' it is not. And that voice of his just soars and soars. There are some amazing leading men on Broadway at the moment no? Laura Osnes is just utterly lovely and her 'Welcome Home' was so fabulous that my goosebumps had goosebumps. A special mention to Beth Leavel as Julia's mother too who gets most of the comedy moments and to Brandon J. Ellis who is incredibly funny as Davy but when he talks to Julia about why he drinks so much it's a heartstopping moment.
This was my real surprise of my Broadway outings.
