This entire thread is the result of a successful trolling opening post by Parsley. What exactly does a doctor mean by "idiot"? It colloquially implies low intelligence or learning disabilities but a doctor, such as Parsley, would reasonably be expected to use a more current and precise term if that were what they meant by the word. And obviously this isn't at all the case with Diane Abbott. So it's just a malicious slur which means nothing of any substance at all, but which is intended to stir up any feelings of discontent which anyone may already have or have had.

Eugh. I read that yesterday. I hate her tone and had to mute her on Twitter after that. The facts were interesting though.

I can't work out if you're doing a *thing* by the way; is it on purpose that you're calling someone an idiot while being consistently unable to spell the word? It's not translating well if it is. Think it might be a 'witty' play on the spelling of her surname... Thansk you for that...but no "I am the Idiott"

Born to working class Jamaican parents, earned a place at Cambridge in the '70s (for contrast, of 3,449 students accepted into Cambridge during the 2015/2016 academic year, only 38 defined themselves as black. Forty years on), worked constantly in politics since 1982, won The Spectator magazine's "Parliamentary Speech of the Year" award in 2008, and everything she has done has been under the double-microscope of being black and being a woman. Maybe she doesn't have the most impressive political record, and she certainly doesn't TV-interview well, but she can out-think any of us morons any day of the week. I suspect we might have seen the same twitter thread/blog post by Jack Monroe - here it is if anyone wants it. cookingonabootstrap.com/2017/06/07/we-need-to-talk-about-diane-abbott-now-explicit-content. Of course, people don't really want it. If you think Diane Abbott is an idiot then you've made up your mind already and nothing anyone says will change it. That's the nature of political discourse in this country - it's as tribal as football.

I actually rather like Diane Abbott. Of course there are things I don't agree with her on but my view of her on the whole is positive. It's the fact that the link above takes me to an article written by Jack Monroe that makes me barf.

She is not an idiot. But v intelligent people can be wrong and lack common sense. And she seems to have lost that ability to relate to people. I wish her well but not a place in government.

Agree entirely that very intelligent people can be wrong! I think one of the problems with our political discourse is that anyone who gets something wrong or makes a mistake gets labelled an idiot. If we could acknowledge that very intelligent people do make mistakes and get things wrong occasionally, and that doesn't mean they should not be listened to again or can't contribute something very valuable to the discussion, I think we could have a far more constructive political culture. Especially as sometimes in politics there *is* no right answer or perfect option. Because if anyone who makes a political mistake is an idiot, then you might as well vote for someone who really is an idiot and has no knowledge or understanding of government at all - like Trump.

Except that it hasn't just been a one-off with Diane though has it. If I went into meetings at work, totally incapable of answering questions relating directly to my area of responsibility I'd be sacked. Her position is elevated 1000 times and she should be all over it. Same with Emily Thornberry who implied that Dermot Murnaghan was sexist because he asked her for the name of the French Foreign Secretary who she was meeting the following day and she didn't know it. What both of these people do is turn the attention back to the interviewer. "You're racist, you're sexist" when the inadequacy actually lies with themselves. And when you call them out on it you're racist and sexist yourself. Some people, both male and female, get over promoted and are not capable of the jobs they're given. When those jobs involve national security we should be allowed to point that out.

The old cliche is that everyone gets promoted to the level of their incompetence, it's true.

Another fun fact - Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbot's majority is 100 times that of Home Secretary Amber Rudd's.

Apart from the TV gaffe of forgetting numbers, why is she comsidered ineffectual and dislikeable?

Because she was deliberately targeted by the Daily Mail and the Conservative Party, because of the colour of her skin.

Did you hear Boris' interview today. Yeah I know it was Eddie Mair (probably the best interviewer out there at the moment and has history making Boris look silly) but absolute car crash. Mair does get Boris flustered. Could be the next prime minister Johnson but no thread on 'ere. Thinking of starting one.

Saw a clip on it on Newsnight tonight, instantly thought of Rabbit and Headlights, but you won't read about it tomorrow morning.

I can remember her getting elected way back in 1987 as one of the first BAME MPs for 60 odd years, there was the spat about her child going to a public school and was considered to be on the left of the Labour Party and had a nice safe seat. But when old Corbyn got elected she came to the fore, it was almost as if she had been promoted beyond her capabilities and that she may have tried to say it was prejudice. Chuka Umunna and Clive Lewis two other black Labour MPs are seen as two of the sharpest guys in their party so I don't think it is an issue of prejudice.
The Tory press jumped on her as Corbyn's sidekick and a return to the looney left days. The joke about her doing the maths on Countdown amused me also that she went on Play Your Cards Right and played the race card. My favourite was when someone pointed out that Russ Abbot's former backing band were The Black Abbots had she ever been a member.

Trying to work out if hitsters post is "about racism" or just "racist". Perhaps he or she would like to clarify

I was being ironic as Diane has often played the race card and the name of the band seemed to suit. Maybe her and Catweazle Corbyn could do a duet for Xmas,
