The award-winning musical is being adapted as Fox’s next live musical production, Variety has learned. Fox’s show comes as the musical celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
“Rent” tells the story of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams during a time of great social and political turmoil, under the shadow of AIDS. Set in New York City’s gritty East Village, the show is a re-imagining of Puccini’s “La Bohème.”
With the estate of the late original playwright Jonathan Larson, Marc Platt — who worked on the network’s “Grease: Live” musical,” plus “La La Land” and “Wicked” — will executive produce the event. Other executive producers are Adam Siegel, Julie Larson, Al Larson and Revolution Studios’ Vince Totino, Scott Hemming and Marla Levine.
More details and casting will be announced at a later date. No premiere date has been set for “Rent.”
“We are so honored to partner with the estate of the brilliant Jonathan Larson and producer Marc Platt on one of the great musicals of our time,” said Dana Walden and Gary Newman, chairmen and CEOs, Fox Television Group. “The title is so iconic, the music is so beloved, and the themes are as meaningful today as they were when the show first premiered on Broadway. With Marc overseeing this project, we are sure it will have a profound impact on the legions of fans who know and love this musical.”
“‘Rent’ was Jonathan’s dream of sharing the theater and the passion he had for it with a whole new generation. None of us could have imagined the massive impact that the messages and themes in ‘Rent’ would have on the theater community or the world…except for Jonathan. We are absolutely thrilled to be continuing Jonathan’s legacy and the still-relevant themes of the show in this way,” the Larsons commented.
“Rent” originally was produced in New York by New York Theatre Workshop and on Broadway by Jeffrey Seller, Kevin McCollum, Allan S. Gordon and New York Theatre Workshop. In 2005, Rosario Dawson and Idina Menzel starred in the film adaptation.
Paradigm and Carol Contes of the Guzman Law Group brokered the deal.

I'm with Emmi! They'll probably replace AIDS with mumps for fear of upsetting anyone...

Jordan Fisher as Mark is an interesting choice, definitely did not see that one coming. Keala Settle is going to knock it out of the park as the Season of Love soloist.

Settle will need to sing better than she did on the X Factor last week if she is going to nail that. She didn't impress live.
I just wonder why we need another screen version of Rent. We have the movie and the live Broadway recording - what is the point of this new one?

Do we know if the powers to be are going to update any of the script? I watched the filmed final performance about a year or two ago and boy was it dated! Is Fox going to make this hip 2018 or is this going to be performed like a museum piece?

If they freeze it in the late '80s like what was done at New World Stages, what's to be updated?

Is Fox going to make this hip 2018 or is this going to be performed like a museum piece? You do know it's set in a fairly specific time period, right? That's partly the point... So no, not museum piece, just the work it should be.

Vanessa Hudgens played Mimi badly at the Hollywood Bowl in 2010. It's lovely for her that she'll get the opportunity to play another role in the show badly on television next year.

Vanessa's performance in Grease was nothing short of stunning, especially considering her circumstance prior to the performance. She was just fabulous, so I hope she can transfer what she did there into this in some form.

I just wonder why we need another screen version of Rent. A lot of things happen not out of necessity. I've never understood why people are so obsessed with whether or not we *need* a particular production. I think if we were to check in with Maslow, the need for *specific* theatrical productions (or filmed productions of theatrical works) wouldn't even register.

Obsession? Hardly.
There are so many musicals that could be adapted for the screen - most for the first time. I would much rather see producers broaden the scope of their thinking rather than trotting out a new version of something that already exists for the screen.

It's slightly disingenuous to say there's no obsession with shows being needed when one of the most common reactions to any sort of revival - be it Hamlet, Lear, Fiddler, RENT - is at least one member of this board responding with "ugh, do we really NEED another production of this?". It was you this time, but there's no need to take my posts as a personal slight, because it is absolutely a board-wide obsession to question the NEED for a revival whenever a show is announced that maybe hasn't been gone for that long.

So Vanessa Hudgens has got time for this but I'm still waiting on that 'Gigi' transfer. She's off my Christmas card list.

Ok so I'll wade in on this. Even as 'Dr Rent' (older readers may remember that long forgotten half of my PhD) not even I 'need' another production of it. Even as fans we all have our personal 'iconic' ones. For me, yes the original Broadway production, but also personally it will take a lot for anything to surpass Bruce Guthrie's version of it.
Do I give a big HELL YES to this version though. Yes. Because it means another reinterpretation, another set of voices and keeping this alive. A wise woman once said to me 'I don't believe in once in a generation productions, theatre should be forever ephemeral and there should always be another one along in a minute'
None of us have to watch every production or any. Personally I don't need Fiddler for another decade but I don't think it shouldn't be on just because I don't care to watch.
Now in the spirit of the day here is, in my humble opinion the most underrated number in Rent.

Couldn't see anything on the earlier posts. How can this be viewed in the UK (if at all)? Satellite TV, internet...? Legally, for the time being, it cant. It may end up being screened on itv2 or channel 5 at 3pm on a random tuesday afternoon as some of the other live musicals have been - but you're best bet is a very thorough google search the next morning to be honest.
