It originated in New York at the Public Theatre, so if there had been bigger demand, surely it would either have extended or transferred while there was a buzz around it. It was one of the most innovative and interesting productions I've seen in a long time, but it's also a fairly "special" thing, so I don't think it would work well for a longer commercial run anyway.

I don’t know what to feel about this show. I’m Filipino and the Marcoses discourse is always an uncomfortable elephant in the room, especially now that the family are back in power. (The son, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., known as Bongbong or BBM is our current President) And yes, the HLL Twitter account disabled comments here, knowing they are getting ratioed and they’re getting the backlash.
I support more inclusive representation, but eeekkk to this. Yikes. The producers claim that this revival is an anti-Marcos, pro-Filipino musical, but the idea of making Imelda as some sort of girlboss and a victim of her husband’s machinations (she was an active player during the Martial Law era), and the fact that two white men wrote the musical. The optics don’t look good.
The Filipino Twitter discussion is also on fire. Even Lea Salonga is accused of being a silent Marcos apologist.

As a white woman, I of course know that I cannot presume to know how Filipinos feel about this show and it's very interesting to hear your thoughts.
But as a white woman, with a keen interest in South East Asia, who's travelled frequently in the area, maybe you are interested in my thoughts: Before Here Lies Love, I knew very little about Imelda Marcos except that she was "the one with the thousands of shoes". So in order to prepare a little, I read a biography about her, which taught me SO MUCH about the Philippines in general and of course their political history. While I know not many will go to these lengths, I think it's good when a musical inspires people to get informed about something.
Secondly, as far the show itself: I loved it while not thinking of Imelda as a heroine. I think the politics came across very well and very shocking; I remember one scene where Imelda and her cronies were shown partying in front of backdrop projections of poor slums in the Philippines being ravaged by typhoons. I cannot remember now who played her husband, but I do remember that the actor was a ball of incredible charisma and that for the first time in my life I understood how people can support godawful politicans and dictators simply because of the charisma factor.
Thirdly: It makes me absolutely mad that there are so few good roles for South East Asian performers, they are either hookers or weak helpless victims or both as in Miss Saigon (which I hate with a passion). So while Imelda was (is, I know she's still alive) a prime bitch and awful person, I was pleased for the Filipino actresses who got to play such a bitchy, strong, fascinating, controversial figure who had her own rags to riches story instead of just playing the helpless meek victims of circumstance.
Well, these are of course only two my two cents, make of it what you will. I really wish I could squeeze it into my NY trip in June, but sadly I won't have the time.

Hmm. Are you reading the thread for the original production or the new transfer?
I've been following the latter and haven't seen hardly anything that I would call as being "on fire." Maybe I missed it. Most of the "hot" posts have been debating the cost and accessibility of the floor seats.
To what exactly are you referring?

Apologies, I was looking more at the Twitter discussions. It’s not going well on Filipino Twitter.
The BWW forum is more on debating on if the venue at Broadway Theater was a more appropriate venue to stage it, since it’s an immersive staging.
Next month would be the previews so it would be interesting if what kind of audiences will they be able to court.

Looks like a scandal is brewing with this production. The show is not going to hire any pit musicians and use “canned” music instead.

I think it should take the circle in the square? I am just not sure why its on Broadway. Had a good run off broadway, went to England , and Australia. Done quite well. Does it really need to be on Broadway. Not every good show needs to be on Broadway

Well this was spectacular. I’d seen it in London from an upper tier seat and enjoyed it. Last night I was on the dance floor at the Broadway theatre and it was a totally unique experience. The score is brilliant surprised how much I remembered of it. I thought the staging was just so imaginative and cleverly done, scaled up massively from the previous production. The audience was loving it, could be very much a word of mouth hit.

I wonder if a London return could be on the cards? Given they completely transformed the Broadway Theatre, I could see this at either the Dominion or Drury Lane.

Drury Lane's flexibility means it could easily transform that space with a similar capacity.

I’m staying in NYC this Christmas (although in the Lower East Side so nowhere near Broadway) and having seen Stop Making Sense last week (I’ve seen the filmed version of American Utopia but Covid put an end to actually going and seeing it), I’m extremely tempted to go and see this, the prices are reasonable compared to the other productions in the area, but I’m undecided on do I go before or after Christmas (I’ll probably go for standing/dancing if I do go, I’m not ready to keel over just yet)

Have a backup. The numbers for this show don’t make it very likely it’ll still be here at Christmas. They’ve announced its closing on November 26th so I dodged a bullet there (yes I would have got a refund/credit but it would have been a lot of bother I could have done without)
