Another Great Comet defender here! Whatever you can say about the music/book (which personally I thought were both great, particularly the latter but appreciate they aren't to everyone's taste/maybe not the best of the best) BUT what I can't let go is the fact that it is some of the most innovative staging of a musical I've seen in a long long time. I haven't seen many of the other performances to get grumpy about losses there, though again I thought everyone was great. But the staging, frankly that deserves all the recognition over the (from what I gather) much more traditional staging of the other winners. Other than that, my personal love for Andy Karl's performance and the 'Hog as a whole is a bit disappointing, but it never really stood a chance. But hey I can revel in the delight that was Karl and Orfeh's insagram feeds which are more beautiful than usual in awards season

And in other Tony news, Cynthia Erivo actually looked great this year. Sadly, it appears lots of other people allowed her to dress them instead. Oy oy oy.
And Gavin, powder blue??

Shut that crap off!
I am so going to use that when things start to drag next time I'm at the theatre.

It was a very American set of winners, not in terms of winners' nationality but in a 'well that's what they seem to prefer' sort of thing. Dear Evan Hansen is unlikely to travel well, with its generic score and its 'interesting' morality whilst Hello Dolly is a retread put on with no real effort to make it work for today, other than to plonk an aging star on stage to go crazy over. Maybe UK producers can find someone similar, if so it could transfer successfully but there's a still a massive 'why?' hanging over the whole enterprise.
Meanwhile the two most effective shows 'Natasha, Pierre.....' and 'Groundhog Day' are left to pick up scraps or nothing but their intelligence and cynicism just doesn't chime with the sort of people who are Tony voters. It's no wonder that Chavkin has done much more visibly praised work over here and that Groundhog Day and Andy Karl are more appreciated here also (there does appear to be a dislike of Minchin in particular that is unfathomable).

For London, I could imagine them going back to the show's roots and mounting a tent and doing it there rather than in an actual theatre (perhaps were they had one for Lazarus). You mean on the train tracks at Kings Cross Station? hmm.

You mean on the train tracks at Kings Cross Station? hmm. It would make some of the staging of Anna Karenina easier if they went for that one instead!

Could stick the theatre tent on the roof.

If they bring the tent back for us, then I hope they bring the vodka shots back too.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned but what's the deal between Glenn Close and either Patti LuPone or Bette Midler? There seems to be a long-running feud or something that everyone knows about except me haha

Well, I'm pleased CFA didn't get completely shut out. But I would very much have preferred that it win Best Book as opposed to Best Direction. Rachel Chavkin did some really groundbreaking work with Great Comet, and I really hated DEH's book.

There seems to be a long-running feud or something that everyone knows about except me haha Patti was the original Norma in Sunset Boulevard in London and Andrew Lloyd Webber told her she'd take it to Broadway. Glenn Close did the LA production and because she was the bigger star, he decided to take her to Broadway instead. Patti held a grudge for many years because Glenn didn't reach out to her. They're okay now though.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned but what's the deal between Glenn Close and either Patti LuPone or Bette Midler? There seems to be a long-running feud or something that everyone knows about except me haha Well, the Glenn and Patti one stems back from 'Sunset Boulevard'. When The Lord took the show to Broadway, he opened with Close although he'd promised Patti the Broadway run. She sued. She won. She bought a house with the proceeds and named her swimming pool 'The Andrew Lloyd Webber Memorial Pool'. Patti had a beef with Glenn following that until they met at the Kennedy Center Awards honouring Barbara Cook years later: “I did see Glenn after all that controversy and there was a great deal of controversy and a great deal of silence on Glenn’s part. I did see her at the Kennedy Center Awards because we were honoring the great Barbara Cook. As luck would have it, I sat at Barbara’s table with everybody else that was performing for Barbara and there was an empty seat right next to me. [Glenn] said, ‘I had nothing to do with it’ and we hugged. And it’s that easy, that you can get rid of years of that anxiety.”

Aw, you go to sleep, dear. You sound cranky. I was very cranky. I'm sorry if that carried over to my post. In regards to the show itself, I enjoyed when I was first watching it and loved when Spacey did some of his impersonations but then I started thinking, "Yea, I get those references but I'm 62 years old". And the several "in the closet" references were really annoying. Really? Who cares? So I think the show really took a step backwards from last year. It's turned back into "Yes, this is your Grandma's Tony show". However, seeing the songs from the shows has made me determined that, once I'm back from London trip, that I will start going to NY to see some shows. Not sure if I can even do once a month. The train fare alone is $100. Will have to be for a matinee as the train schedule doesn't allow for evening show also.

Can we also agree David Hyde Pierces performance was possibly one of the worst ever for the Tony Awards. Bette was there and healthy, she could of performed any number from the show. Or even have Gavin perform something. When you choose to perform an initialy cut song, theres a problem. I blame Scott Rudin really, he pretty much just shrugged and slapped the other shows in the face by saying we can perform the worst song in the show and still have a box office hit. Its actually pretty disgusting,

I know you don't literally mean "can we agree," but no. Rudin doesn't need to sell tickets for the period Bette's in the show. I felt kind of bad for DHP having to try to sell that to an audience well beyond what he usually does 8 times a week, but it was commendable given the context. Also, you don't know that "Bette could" have done anything.

'Last year's Tonys proved a tough act to follow. Sunday's show, which was hosted by Kevin Spacey and crowned Dear Evan Hansen and Bette Midler as the big winners, was down a steep 31 percent from 2016. Overnight returns from Nielsen have the CBS telecast averaging a 4.7 rating among metered market households, essentially tying the numbers from five years ago. That's still not likely to be enough to help it top the surging Stanley Cup final on NBC. No one expected this year's show to pull a bigger audience. Heat around the 2016 Tonys was rather unprecedented and, thus, presented an insurmountable ratings bar. By the time the Broadway kudos rolled around to crown Lin Manuel Miranda's Hamilton, the musical was already such a cultural phenomenon that it was credited with the 15-year viewership high.' www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/tv-ratings-tonys-lose-steam-hamilton-buzz-1012489?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+thr%2Ftelevision+%28The+Hollywood+Reporter+-+Television%29------- Seems the buzz around Dear Evan Hansen isn't even slightly close to what it was/is for Hamilton. Not even with Bette included.

No, it's not, and I found this year to be a bit of a relief. All four nominated shows were more or less balanced, and all four nominated shows really didn't have a BIG SONG that would work well out of context save for DEH, somewhat. I knew this would be less of a blowout, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, right? It's fine for the Tonys to be a little niche. Its appeal always going to be geographically and financially dependent in a way (are you near NYC/do you have $ to get here and see shows if you don't).
