Kevin Spacey to host the 2017 Tony Awards:
Couldn't find an existing thread, so please merge if so, but thought it'd be better late than never to to discussing it!

Oooo what an interesting? choice. I will be intrigued to see what he does!
Looks like the Best Musical nominees are pretty locked in to be Groundhog Day, Dear Evan Hansen, Great Comet and Come From Away right?

Not really here for this choice. If they have to have another white man can it at least be one that will sing and dance for my entertainment?
Still excited for the night though.

snutte, first of all, loved the earlier comment. You're my new favorite.
From what I've seen/heard of War Paint so far, I feel that it really missed the mark with what it has to say and what it should say for a show written in 2017. It could have been truly progressive, but a show put together by three men about two women resulted in an older gay man's fantasy. Having said that, I'm booked to see it in May. So..I really don't know if it will get a Tony nod, but not impossible.
Anastasia, forget about it. Commercially it seems to be doing just fine, and I think it has some good merits in terms of design and costumes (purists will disagree because of its exclusive use of an LED screen to provide the scenery). The book also seems to be rudimentary, and overall, I don't see anything cutting edge about it in this competitive season. Its title character and Mary Beth Peil could get a nomination though. I doubt Christy would win, but Mary is a possibility.
I think Groundhog Day might be one of those shows that would get a total snub this year. Every now and then there seems to be a major show that is totally left out, and I feel that Groundhog Day might be the victim this year. Andy Karl will certainly get a nomination, because he's up for it just about every year and never gets it, and I think the committee will try hard to champion for him after showing relentless dedication and fortitude during the preview periods. I think it'll either be him or Ben Platt. Groban will get nominated, but under no circumstances should he win. He was just fine, but I would think he's got a better chance of winning if his character would be in the supporting actor than lead. I felt that there was no male lead in Comet, TBH.
Revivals: Glenn Close aside, is Sunset Boulevard eligible for anything? If so, they might throw in Michael Xavier but there's no way he'd win nor should he, and Fred, who is excellent, but not as good as George Hearn's Max who got the Tony in '95. Miss Saigon won't get a lick of attention, including Jon Jon. Dolly WILL win best revival, and likely that Midler wins best actress. Supporting actor could possibly be nabbed by Gavin Creel.

I'd be shocked if Andy Karl doesn't at least got nominated, he has been nominated twice before and he is sensational!

I'm sure he will, but I feel this is the only nomination the show will get. POSSIBLY best musical, but I doubt it. The rest I think will be completely overlooked.

It virtually had no competition in London. Dreamgirls is one of my favorite shows before it even opened in London, but let's face it, the book is dire and at times really really basic. School of Rock? Get real. The Girls? Girl, please.
When you compare it to shows like Comet, Dear Evan Hansen, most of the critical theatre going audiences and committee members would roll their eyes at the fact that its yet another movie-to-musical written by a group of foreign men. Don't get me wrong, I like the show a LOT, but things need to be taken into context.

Rachel Bloom could have been a perfect host for the tonys but well. As for the nominations, 100% agree w/ ali973

Mr. Riedel of the New York Post is predicting Andy Karl, Ben Platt, Corey Cott and David Hyde Pierce to be the Lead Actor in a Musical nominees, with Andy and Ben being the ones battling it out. But ultimately I think it will be Ben.

Corey Cott's role is pretty lame and tame. I'm not sure what makes it a standout or Tony-worthy. What happened to Christian Borle in Falsettos or Josh Groban?

Yea I'm sure it will be Ben because it's the "worthier" part and those tend to win awards all the time.
Since I haven't seen Groundhog Day, I can't comment on Andy Karl's performance, but personally I think it's more difficult to pull off a character who's initially rather unlikeable and who needs to win the audience's affection than someone who's got the audience on his side from the first minute because who can't to some extent identify with the awkward outsider wanting to be loved?

I absolutely love Groban but I don't think Pierre is a Tony-worthy role the way he's written in Comet. If it were actual War and Peace it would be quite another thing (Paul Dano was incredible in the BBC version) but in Comet, Pierre is just a grumpy drunk sod in a fat suit sulking around on the sidelines. As for Falsettos, I thought Rannells had the edge but Whizzer is probably considered Supporting? I somehow found Borle miscast.

I agree with you fully- I think it's more of a supporting role..but it's a high profile show with a famous singer. So perhaps they'll do it anyway.
Falsettos was boring as far as I'm concerned and wouldn't be disappointed if no one gets any accolade because I kind of hated being there seeing the tuneless show (I have friends who would kill me for this)..But it seems like it has some of those meaty-Tony type characters. What about Xavier and Johansen from Sunset? Is Sunset eligbable for any awards at all?

No, I think Sunset isn't eligible. Or was that Sunday in the Park with Jake? Some producer tweaked something, but I didn't pay attention. Either way, I don't think Xavier would stand a chance this year against this competition and Johansen would be supporting if anything (and again, I think much more deserving competition).

I'm not sure how the Drama League works but from reading the nominees it looks like everyone and everything and their mother is nominated?

^ Quite. What is the criteria for the Drama League awards? "You opened"? In fact I think I actually might be nominated too!

As for Falsettos, I thought Rannells had the edge but Whizzer is probably considered Supporting? I somehow found Borle miscast. Pierre had a much bigger part in Great Comet than I was actually expecting, having read so many comments online saying how non-lead the part is. To me it did clearly feel like a lead part with the first half focused more on Natasha and the second half on Pierre, but yes not necessarily a Tony-worthy one. He still might get a nomination though. I loved Falsettos but I agree, for me Borle wasn't as perfect a casting nor as worthy of a nomination as the rest of the cast (I'd love to see any of Rannells, Uranowitz and Block nominated). Though if he is going to be nominated I'd rather it be for Marvin than Wonka if only based on overall quality of show alone... It is tough to come up with alternatives to fill the slots when the real race is clearly between two - I will be relatively surprised if Karl beats out Platt (though loved them both) but absolutely shocked if anyone else somehow takes it!
