Surely it's a bit too early to start a 2018 thread, isn't it?... ;-)

So now that the Oliviers are over, will the theatre scrooges let us discuss next year? At least for the sake of lazy people like me that try but fail to keep up with eligibility and new shows coming in. Any updates on the eligibility list?

Y'all did this just to confuse my (sleep deprived) brain when looking for THIS year's winners didn't you?
'what? Hamilton? Frankenstein? what year is this? who am I?'
Anyway see you back on this year's thread.
(Except to say now, that if that Goat wins over 'my' Angels this time next year I'm retiring, as you all were)

This is potentially gonna be another dull year at the Oliviers if Hamilton is gonna sweep like Harry Potter did this year. Though I could see it being like Book of Mormon, where it only got six nominations and won four of them. Though just throwing it out there, Rachel John for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical please and thank you.

Barring a major surprise, Hamilton surely has the following locked in:
Outstanding Achievement in Music Best New Musical
Given that it could easily win lighting, sound, costumes, director and any of the acting awards, I think it's destined to win more Oliviers than BOM did. Especially as it won less Tonys than Hamilton and that's despite them winning the sound design award that didn't exist when it came round to Hamilton's turn (and they would have surely won it). Hamilton is just the more hyped and well-rounded show, so I'm not sure how comparable they are. As I said in another thread, I think Hamilton will miss out on choreography over here considering the amount of dance-heavy musicals we'll have. Although many people thought Shuffle Along would win the Tony so who knows?

Maybe! It depends how much they buy into Hamilton hype. I thought Shuffle Along would have won the Tony for costumes and they didn't.

I kind of feel 42nd Street had it in the bag the moment it opened.

Yes I agree that 42nd Street will get costume and choreography and thats it, none of the acting categories are knock out, I think Follies will win revival and winning the acting awards along with Hamilton.

I think the only one that's pretty certain in the acting awards for Hamilton is Rachel John for Angelica. It's such a great supporting role and Rachel is always a knockout.

Pretty sure Andrew Scott will be a shoo in for a Best Actor nom for Hamlet

I think Burr is the best role for an actor in the show. He gets subdued moments and a big showstopper. He gets to be the narrator and the antihero. He gets to be the sympathetic villain. So if Giles Terara can pull it out of the bag, I don't see anyone else taking that from him. I actually think Angelica is a pretty weak part outside of Satisfied (she basically disappears halfway through and doesn't go on much of a journey), but Satisfied is such an excellently written song that as long as the person playing her can sing and rap, they'll be acclaimed in the role. (Not the biggest fan of Renee's Tony win for the part and think Karen Olivo plays her more effectively).

Stick my neck out early here and say next year will be all about: Angels In America, The Ferryman, Follies and Hamilton.
I can see Paddy Considine giving Nathan Lane a run for his money and Brid Brennan getting best featured actress.

Yes, the performances in Follies and Hamilton are outstanding.
Oh, I've just woken up.

Yes, the performances in Follies and Hamilton are outstanding. Oh, I've just woken up. An illustration, however, as to the Oliviers not being about quality now but about the best known shows. We had the unaccountable Harry Potter sweep this year, for example, if you didn't know you could have sworn you were watching the Evening Standard awards.

Interesting. On the plays thread there is some discussion as to whether 'Girl from the North Country' is a play or a musical. This might chuck the cat among the pigeons.

I totally get the basis for discussing the plays / musicals that will be nominated, but the *performances*? Some of these productions haven't been cast yet! Hell, we only found out the lead for Hamilton two weeks ago, and he's a virtual unknown at that.

Nothing wrong with it!
Check sites like awardswatch.com/forums. They discuss which performances are going to win Oscars before they even know what the films are about.

See, I think that just reinforces my skepticism Most of the time they're surprisingly accurate. I just think it's harmless fun and those that want to do it can and those that don't don't have to.
