Saw him a couple of times, his Rudyard Kipling one-man show and as Prospero for RSC. Very good in both.

Of course his obituary reminds me he appeared in one of the greatest Shakespeare productions of all time - he was Fool to Paul Scofield's Lear in the Peter Brook production. Anyone here see that ? I believe it was a bit different to the film version they eventually made.

He was an amazing actor and by all accounts a very nice chap indeed with a wicked sense of humour. Also half of a very devoted couple with his partner Geoff until his sad early death back in 1987.
I will always remember both the RSC Prospero and the performance as Clement Attlee in 'Tom and Clem'. A huge stage presence. Also much fun on film and television.
I would have loved to have seen him play the Fool but far before my time.

Just seen that this stalwart of the stage died the other day, bit surprised more wasnt made of it. He played many parts at the RSC and NT. I saw him as Prospero in the 1993 RSC production with Simon Russell Beale as Ariel. A sad loss😓

There's a thread over in Performers but not many comments, he has been long absent from the stage.

He was strangely anonymous to many - well, to me, anyway. I thought I'd never seen him but Michael Billington's obituary in the Guardian lists several things in which I did see him.

Stupidly lazy bbc online states he would be best known for a bit part in a non official Bond film made in the 80s!😡 Maybe he would. There have been a few actors like him, great stage actors in their day but somehow partially forgotten in later life when they stopped appearing regularly - John Wood, John Neville, David Warner even. Albert Finney seems to be another.
