Air travel along with any other public transport is in a similar position to the Theatre. They can only recover when we as individuals are comfortable to mix with strangers, at the moment the indications are from limited polls is that we in the UK are reticent to lose the comfort of the lockdown. This is further complicated by the German precedent who are now considering re-imposing the few restrictions that were lifted last week. As with Theatre, Air Travel will recover but the timescale will likely be longer than for 9-11 as the perceived risk to oneself is higher. All the best Mark in these difficult times, as one who has gone through redundancy the emotional rollercoaster is a difficult one and must be more so when consultation and selection is required, in my case as it was only a few people consultation was not required, it was a fait accompli and was called into the office and informed my role was no longer required.

This is further complicated by the German precedent who are now considering re-imposing the few restrictions that were lifted last week. Trust me, we aren't. There was a minor flutter when the oh so important reproduction rate had gone from 0.9 to 1.0, but the Robert Koch Institute later admitted that a) it was rounded up from 0.96, b) it was already back down to 0.9 and c) that current rates rely on older data from before the slight relaxation of the lockdown. It was probably people sneaking out over Easter to meet friends and family. But infection rates are shrinking daily and have been around 1,000 per day now. There's also major anger because the RKI admitted that while they COULD be testing around 800,000 people now, they still only test 400,000 because there has been no clear communication. We here look towards Austria that has been a week or so ahead and they keep doing well and easing more and more restrictions and it's the same in other countries.

Air Travel will recover but the timescale will likely be longer than for 9-11 as the perceived risk to oneself is higher. I think it's more likely to be the other way around. There are steps you can take to reduce your risk of catching a virus: being careful about what you touch, keeping distant from others where possible, wearing masks to reduce the dangers from coughing. There's nothing you can do to affect the risk of being killed by terrorists. Knowing you have some control over your life — choosing to have some control — builds confidence. As for the people whose jobs are at risk, I imagine that most of them will get their jobs back fairly quickly. After a period of reduced income no company is going to want to go through the hassle of recruiting and training new staff when they already have a list of people they know can do the work.

Trying to do a one day course on weather condensed into two hours on MS teams which kept going bonkers today for work while my mother wants to tell me that the house opposite now has a teddy bear in the window opposite the ones she has put up.
Cows have appeared in normal walk fields, some come every year so it's not a surprise, I opted to avoid as they were curious/nervous and having been charged by cows the other year I admit I felt a flutter of fear. Wonder how all the non usual walkers who have been tramping through the fields for their exercise are going to respond.

Steady flow into Heathrow this morning and evening. Can only get busier now and it's depressing as hell. We have to do something about unrestricted tourism and no-essential beanos masquerading as 'business trips'. IMO!
Also the high streets are picking up noticeably. Most small businesses seem open, majority of the chains probably not. It may not be official but the absence of police says there has been a change.

Just a small point but vital...wearing a mask stops the person wearing the mask from spreading the virus if they cough (and have the virus of course).....it does not protect you if another person coughs near you and they are not wearing a mask.....so don’t go round thinking wearing a mask makes you safe. In fact it could make you less safe if it makes you feel safer and you go closer to people because you are wearing it....

After a period of reduced income no company is going to want to go through the hassle of recruiting and training new staff when they already have a list of people they know can do the work. From a cabin crew perspective, recency is important (one flight every 90 days). After 180 days, more training needed. Annual exams to keep you compliant. A full training course currently takes around 5 weeks, but even as a bare minimum would need to be 3 weeks and thats without any customer service elements. When crew leave and come back, they have to do the full retraining. Pilots have similar requirements to keep recent, otherwise lots more training and checks required. For the most part, they can only fly one aircraft type (for example, 747 or 777, not both), whereas cabin crew can fly on up to three aircraft. A stark comment from IATA. For every job lost at an airline, another 24 go somewhere in the value chain. www.uniqueforwarding.com/remarks-of-alexandre-de-juniac-at-the-iata-media-briefing-on-covid-19-14-april-2020/

And we're now hearing that the tighter fitting type of masks that do protect the wearer, if they're the sort with a valve, don't protect anyone else from the wearer's germs - the valve lets nothing in but everything out.

Feeling incredibly overwhelmed with loneliness today. Living alone is bloody miserable in these times and I am utterly desperate for some proper human contact (i.e. a hug) and to see any family or friends. I feel like I want to punch the next person who tells me I'm lucky to have video calls because yes, they are something, but they are just not the same.
Any talk of extending lockdown or things not starting to slowly go back to normal soon is becoming unbearable.
I'm lucky I guess in that I have work as a distraction during the day but even that is becoming almost impossible to concentrate on now. I have no desire to do anything - I've just had a call from a neighbour asking if I can get her groceries again and I feel guilty but I can't bear the thought of going out to do anything at the minute.

Not the same as a real hug, but please have some virtual ones. I can empathise with the lack of concentration and feeling disinclined to do anything as I'm struggling with those things too.

So sorry for you today. It’s not helpful being told you are “lucky” is it...because it is all about how you feel. I think we will all have bad days along the way. Perhaps try and just inhabit a different way of living for the day? Don’t listen to the news for the day (as all they do is endlessly speculate anyway)....but I realise sometimes nothing really helps. I find the video chats exhausting and not very satisfying....I think it’s all that “filling the silence?” I hope you feel better soon. This too will pass. *virtual hug*

@posterj , adding another virtual hug to the pile.
I can understand how you feel: I've been coping with this whole thing fairly well, I believe, on most days I'm positive and cheerful, but a day or two will come along occasionally when it will all just seem so hard, I'll feel useless (all that pressure to do great work, professionally, and at the same time learn a new language, find a way to do good and change the world, become a better and better looking version of myself, all while tending to my - non-existing - sourdough starter, does occasionally get to me) and this will all feel grey and overlong, and yes, lonesome.
I know it feels counter-intuitive, but going for a walk (or a run) may help; actually, anything that usually helps you clear your mind. Even if that's dancing around your living room, go for it! And don't feel bad for feeling bad. It's perfectly normal, given the circumstances.

Thank you both, and sorry for the rant! X No need to apologise, everyone needs somewhere to share their feelings and let off a little steam. I second @forrest's suggestion of dancing round the living room. I find either dancing to some cheesy pop music or belting out an ALW classic at the top of my (not exactly in tune) voice is very therapeutic!

Poster j no need to apologise. This is unprecedented and we are in the ‘unknown’, no idea of the outcome. Just hope the ‘experts’ and those lovely nerds, the research scientists can sort this one out. I’m certainly up and down and keeping ‘up’ is tiring. I have found some decent lectures on tnet from Gresham college, huge archive of interesting stuff. And I am reading, discovering new detective/spy authors. But I’m thinking my youngest grandson who is just beginning to talk in little sentences will be entering his silent teenage phase before we have a proper conversation. Boring, I know, to hear about other people’s families but he has just started to ‘sing’ along to Sinatra’s ‘My Way’ with a massive loud shout out of ‘my waaaaay!’ So that was cheering this morning as it was sent over via WhatsApp. I thought I should report that this means musical entertainment is safe for the future.

I saw an article on the BBC news website about someone who has taken the opportunity of being stuck at home to finish building a railway in his garden. I was expecting a model railway. It is not a model railway. He's built a very short length of full-size standard gauge railway. My ambition with my garden is to uncover my path.

Current situation off loading positively encouraged here, everyone needs a space to be real and not feel like they have to be upbeat.
Have danced a few times on very bad days, stick on lively track, if nothing else am so out of breath about 20 seconds in can't think of anything else. Lack of fitness not illness.
Have found myself intently staring at new leaves now, not just wildlife. Did wave and say hello to cows yesterday, gotta take interaction where you can.

Yes the current situation is difficult for a lot of people. No one should ever feel guilty about feeling fed up, frustrated ,worried or depressed. This is an unprecedented time and the only thing we can think is that it will come to an end . It isn't always helpful all the speculation and too much news sometimes does not help. I wonder what I did before Chris Chitty and Patrick Valance did their 5 o clock briefings! Still even if is one small thing each day that is funny, positive etc try and focus on that. Seeing Captain(Colonel) Tom this morning watching his flypast was lovely. We all just need to pull together and get through this the best way that we can and that suits our different needs and personalities.

Don’t listen to the news for the day I'd take that further and say "Don't listen to the news", full stop. I find I get enough of what I really need to know from headlines, teasers and news articles online. I have a relative in the US who is watching the news obsessively and is absolutely frantic with worry most of the time. She's also grossly overestimating (I hope) the scope and impact of the virus (which is bad enough as is)... she thinks everyone is going to get it and 50% of the people who get it will die. I've given up trying to reassure her with current factual information. Current situation off loading positively encouraged here, everyone needs a space to be real and not feel like they have to be upbeat. Exactly! On my down days, I accept that it's a down day and think, "oh well, I'll feel better tomorrow". And if not tomorrow, the day after... I find that chocolate and humor (watching QI reruns, primarily) make me feel better.

Doing some tidying, I found a tube of Jelly Tots and a big bag of Skittles hidden amongst some other stuff. 🙂

Two lovely unexpected conversations today:
1 - bumped, not literally, into a neighbour and we had a really satisfying rant about how dismal it all is and how we are missing going to the theatre and other cultural things
2 - went out for an early morning supermarket raid and the coffee shop on the street has reopened for takeaway so I treated myself to a latte and croissant (bliss); really nice chat with the guy working there who said that he, too, was really missing theatre
I can't quite explain why, but the fact that those two conversations turned so quickly to how much we want to get back to the theatre and that online streams just make us miss it more really boosted me. It's so nice to know that I'm not alone and also that there is still an audience out there apart from me just waiting for them to reopen.
And it was just so nice to have some human contact again...
