I'm not up to date with coffee culture but I was wandering round the supermarket today and saw some canned coffee with nitrogen in it. I have vague memories of nitrogen being used with ice cream but the coffee thing is a new one to me. Apparently nitrogen is the big thing these days. Eh? In what way was there nitrogen "in" canned coffee?

Have been worried that not all members of my family have passports and that I may live to see collapse of US. Fudgenuts.

In what way was there nitrogen "in" canned coffee? As far as I can tell it's foamy cold coffee. Apparently nitrogen gives a better mouth feel than carbon dioxide when force-fizzing drinks. I first saw it on a shelf with the instant coffees and wondered how that could possibly work, but I gather it's the coffee version of beer in a can with a widget to create a head when the can is opened.
I don't know what it's like, but considering that one of the most expensive coffees in the world is one that comes out of the rear end of a civet and by the coffee industry's own admission tastes terrible I suspect that doesn't matter all that much.

I've just bought the 60th birthday present for my very good friend Tibidabo. Steady on boys. You'll have me running out of Tena if you're not careful. Avatar changed in both your honours... Now if you'll excuse me, I think I can hear my Dial-a-Ride outside. Strip-bingo Sunday. I think. (Well, it definitely wasn't last Thursday...oops!)

Ah okay I get you. I didn't know about the N 2 vs CO 2 thing. As you alluded to, I've seen liquid nitrogen being used to make ice cream very fast. I've had the civet coffee once, in a Vietnamese restaurant, and it certainly wasn't terrible but also it didn't taste very different from a fairly decent normal coffee.

I sent off the final draft of my play to the director/creative team. As the kids say 'sh*t just got real'. But also I'm stagey enough to have done so to the accompaniment of the Smash soundtrack.

This is a first in 11 years of temping: I just got let go from a job before I even started it! I was waiting in the company's reception when the temp agency phoned to say I wasn't wanted after all as they want someone who's available for longer - I'm already booked for another job in February. I'm now on a bus home feeling very hacked off.

Woke up early today. On my way to Madrid to visit some friends before I take my flight to Dublin tomorrow. I have the most chauvinistic guys on Earth behind me on the bus. Disgusting! I kinda want to say something to them but I don't want any confrontation at all since they seem to be a little drunk too.

The theatre company I'm chair of just got awarded the Arts Council funding we needed to continue for another year, and they made us jump through many more hoops than usual. But the relief that I as chair don't have to make anyone redundant is palpable.

1 hour until the last exam of my degree starts. 4 hours of computer architecture (let me tell you, babes, I don't know enough to sit the full four hours). FIVE hours until I'm only a thesis from graduating.
Wish me luck! 🙏

It's been a while since anyone discovered anything new from the M&S foodhall to share.
Well, you've all heard of greengages? Ladies and gentlemen, I give you limited edition redgages! (So rare I get a red spelling-alert squiggle when I type the word!) They're teeny-tiny, but the stone is minuscule, so you get more plum than you'd initially think. Try to resist until they ripen from orangey-pinky to a lovely red colour. Truly scrumptious.

I spent a morning transcibring, which is currently one of my sh*t-jobs-to-get-by. And Word, which had been playing up for a couple of days, lost all of it. Which means I've essentially halved what I earn from it now. And I'm just so sick of it all, all the scraping by on minimum wage, and lack of security, and never ending worry over jobs. And this has tipped me over an already precarious edge.

Oh @emicardiff , that's flipping rotten. Don't know what to say to help but I really hope the work hasn't actually disappeared and can be recovered. Word always was a bit flaky but sometimes 'lost' documents were still there somewhere and could be rescued if you were lucky. Keeping my fingers crossed for you and sending virtual hugs.

And this has tipped me over an already precarious edge Cling on, @emicardiff. Things change. Wise primate words there. They do. I've been over that precarious edge too, was desperately low with no work at all and will never forget a friend, actually more of an acquaintance, saying that something always comes along. It does, and it did, but I realise it's tough while it's as you described. That would certainly make me want to punch the universe in the face, or at the very least grab its lapels and shout at it. All I originally came in to say was that I curtailed work as I'm at the tail end of flu and still not great but better. Poor Mrs Backdrifter though is on the couch, shivering under a duvet.

I hope your luck improves soon @emicardiff. Mine did unexpectedly last week. After having my latest temp job cancelled on me at the last minute on Tuesday I went to the bank on Friday thinking I'd be running out of money & would have to raid an ISA. To my considerable surprise I found a payment for £460 from the temp agency. I called them asking if it was an error & was told they had paid me for an hour as courtesy for Tuesday & that had triggered a £450 income tax repayment! So I now have enough to live on till I start a job in February. Also, because I didn't have to be at work, I was able to see a terrific ballet performance on Friday afternoon that I would have otherwise missed. So my work cloud last week had a very silver lining. I hope yours does too soon.

I made vegetable chilli while talking to a friend on speakerphone. I didn't pay attention to which of the nearly-identical cans was hot paprika and which was sweet paprika. The result does taste good, but right now I could probably defrost the freezer by breathing on it.

Thanks Dawnstar! and wow that's some very good stroke of luck (I am in fact also waiting with gritted teeth for a tax rebate I know I'm owed) And thanks @theatremonkey and sf we're coming up on a year since the Temp Job of Hell and a kind of benchmark of how long things have been awful. Much good has happened in other respects, but I know you both know what a long old slog it is.
