I posted not for praise (honest) but hopefully to prompt others to look twice - he could have been legless through other substances, he could have thrown stuff at me (happened once, bloke lying in the middle of the road with crutches next to him, when I stopped my car to help he threw a crutch at me .. opposite the police station where they'd held him overnight, unbeknown to me). But it's always worth checking. Totally with you on this - sadly you cannot imagine how many people wouldn't agree with us. During my last first aid course we were discussing the legalities of stopping and helping and I relayed a story to the class (who were all strangers to me.) One Sunday morning, very early - maybe a little before 7AM - we were driving and spotted a man in a high-vis jacket lying face down on the pavement, completely still. Thinking him perhaps a night worker who had collapsed on the way home I pulled over and leapt out of the car. As I approached I started calling "Can you hear me?" Too late, I noticed the tool box on the other side of his body and he turned his head, looked up and said, "Yes love. I'm with the water board!" On further investigation I realised he was up to his armpit down one of those tiny manholes that house the water mains taps inside them! When I finished telling my story to the class, instead of the chuckles I was expecting, I was greeted with expressions of sheer horror from my classmates. "What? You STOPPED?" said one. "Are you mad? It could have been a trap." The others all backed her up. Only the course giver agreed that he would have done the same thing. Oh, and the waterboard man was lovely - laughed just the right amount and expressed his appreciation that I'd stopped. And yes, I always stop. That's someone's dad/mum/nan....it's someone.

I got notified that my mail in ballot has been received to the voting office back in the US. Now it's time to wait for November 6th to see if the truly awful senator from my state gets voted out.

On one hand productive: I've churned out some 3000 words of book draft and another 1000 words of review.
Personally, stressful/upsetting that a friend ended 8 years of friendship out of professional jealousy, simply because I had an article published she thought she had the only authority to write (clearly editors felt differently)
Meanwhile I'm sat clock watching waiting to hear from a friend who has been climbing up Machu bloody Pichu all week and should be back to civilisation soon. You know there's no real reason to worry, people do it all the time, and yet and yet. (basically stop playing at Paddington Bear in Peru and let me know you're safe idiot man)

The issue of ending a long-term friendship can be quite fraught, though they can just peter out. My main experience was quite different though not amicable, despite my efforts and I really did try and still regret what happened.
My best friend from university always had the most ghastly boyfriends (imo, obviously!) and married the worst of the lot, who wasn't from the UK and divorced her once he knew he'd be able to bring his real, long-term girlfriend here from abroad. But the issue which sundered us was that my friend got involved in one of those pyramid selling schemes and wanted me to invest. Though I'd always aim to be supportive of any decision she made, I was hurt that she was prepared to risk our friendship for a business opportunity so after much thought, I wrote to her (this was in the days before email) to explain that I valued her friendship and did not want to put it at risk so I'd prefer to keep things separate. I never heard from her again but even had I known that would be the outcome, it wouldn't have affected my decision.

Public booking opened today for the next tranche of productions at Sheffield Theatres. You should have seen the length of the queue. It was just like the olden days, before the interweb was invented!
Normally, if I see a queue, I join it, but being a hipster, albeit one who wears a collar and tie, I'm spending the day at a conference on modernism.
The first speaker was straight out of Nuts in May, there's a woman knitting, and Martyn Ware is here. For younger members, he's the man who invented synth-pop.

Strange how people think that if their plans are disrupted by something they always knew was a possibility then expressing how disappointed they are will make the disruption unhappen.
I was at a pub for lunch today. When I arrived it was quiet but an hour later it was very busy, and the presence of several pre-booked groups meant that the kitchen was absolutely maxed out and they had to start telling customers that it would be an hour before any more walk-ins could be seated. That didn't go down well with one group that had just wandered in, and one of them kept pointing out that they were disappointed because they'd travelled a long way.
What did she expect to happen? "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realise you'd travelled a long way. In that case we'll get our spare chef to open up the extra kitchen that we hold in reserve specifically for people who have travelled a long way."

Random act of kindness.... I walked back to my car which I’d parked on a big and busy open air car park. It was standing alone , all nearby cars had gone . As I approached my car I saw something white covering the drivers window. I rushed towards it , fearing the worst, that the window had been smashed while I’d been gone . I pulled away the plastic carrier bag which had been pulled apart and shaped to cover the window... no breakage , I’d left the window open, it had started to rain and some kind person had fashioned a carrier bag to cover my window and stop the rain getting in ! I was so moved by this act of kindness , I drove home , letting other vehicles go in front of me (it annoyed a few other drivers who pipped me for letting others in) and since then I’ve been doing my own random acts of kindness . Kindness breeds kindness ...

Clocks went back last night - an extra hour in bed. Unfortunately my body clock didn’t get that memo. Up nice and early.

Yup. I really really don't like Ted Cruz. I haven't met anybody outside of Texas that does. That would be amazing if that weasel got kicked to the curb

It was horrible having to put the lights on before 5pm today. Maybe it's the combination of the clocks changing & the weather getting cold both happening within a few days of each other but I suddenly feel depressed about winter - and I'm someone who doesn't even like hot weather.

I really really don't like Ted Cruz. Whenever I see his name it makes me think that it should be Ted Cruise but he got confused by all the vowels and gave up.

Woke up to an email from an American High school student telling me how much she liked my article on Company and that it had changed the way she thought about theatre. It's a cliche and a half but honestly finding out something you write impacts just one person that much is amazing. And as a former high school teacher, to feel like I had an impact...that's pretty much all I was ever aiming for in life.
Added to that a lot of nastiness around that article from a former friend- being accused of bragging, self promotion, even lying. Well let's just say some balance is restored in the universe this morning.

Surely if you're coming from a long way, you'd book in advance?

My S.A.D. light sessions are now a highlight of my day... I went for marching round the village for an hour today. It was actually quite pleasant in the sun despite the cold wind. The downside is then feeling depressed walking past the area that is currently lovely fields but it looking very likely to be covered in houses & a tram route in the next few years.

Well, tonight I am attending an ‘in conversation’ event with Josie Rourke and Tom Hiddleston. I am currently waiting in the foyer, and it is fangirl central. Apparently some people have been waiting since this morning. I am cringing already! I’ve already had conversations revolving around tumblr-theories about Hiddles’ psychology and well-being.
I am dreading audience Q&As.

Pleased to report that the audience behaved itself! Q&A not too bad after all - possibly because they ignored the woman in front of me who stood up and waved something made of tinsel to try to get picked to ask a question. I swear Hiddles glanced at her, then deliberately looked away and said ‘let’s go to someone at the back...’.
She did not take the hint.
But there were a couple of really good acting technique questions from drama school students that pulled out some detailed stuff.
The video will go online eventually, in case anyone is interested in some quite geeky acting/directing chat.
Edit: Josie Rourke talked a bit about Mary Queen of Scots and her experience of directing theatre vs films - and mentioned transferring a production to New York that didn’t work because the people and the chemistry were all different. Any ideas what production that might have been?

I’ve tried to explain this to my male friends and they don’t get it. Whenever I see pic of Cruz my Creep Meter goes off the scale

Just tell them he's the Zodiac Killer. When they protest, point out that the rumour's been going round for ages and he still has yet to deny it (although he did ruin it a little bit by trying to join in with the joke at one point).
(Also, I wonder if creep factor is maybe a female thing rather than a US thing, women having been raised since birth by society to be constantly on the alert for men who mean us harm, making us more attuned to people who probably aren't murderers but nonetheless give us the willies, and thus making us more likely to notice and/or react when someone gives out 'off' vibes.)

I feel like any crime you can walk away from is quantifiably less bad than being murdered, but maybe that's just me.....
