The Olivier is very disappointing. The Dorfman sounds much better.

I get the impression RN wants to leave the main and most scrutinised stage
And what is also the trickiest
With work that has been validated and not have any flops at the end of his tenure
I understand the relevance of London Road
It is perhaps his most critically praised work and to direct it again will be nice and significant for him
I am amazed that Sheen wants to appear again in Nye
Can’t imagine anything more deadly dull
Focus on Dorfman where ALL the work is new

I read it too quickly and thought it said 'London Tide' but still, a three play season of old stuff in the Olivier is a bit underwhelming.
Also had hoped a transfer or two might have been announced.

In case a transfer or tour doesn’t materialise, it’s currently on NT at Home. I’ve just watched it earlier and thought it was fantastic. Yes, thank you, I saw it in the Dorfman and again on NT at Home. Did they mention it parsley1?

"Nye" back? It didn't exactly get raves last time. "London Road" more understandable but I would have thought it would struggle to fill the Olivier unless there's some big casting. It was staged in the Olivier before as well

I think theatre is changing They need to make money Artistic risk is less a priority costs are at the forefront of everything And everyone is equally guilty including audiences Rep seasons have gone Times are different Honestly for new work it’s the RC They are really on a roll

It was staged in the Olivier before as well Yes, but that was when there was still a huge buzz about the show because it had sold out the Cottesloe. Since then the buzz has moved on and there's a film if anyone was still curious. Maybe if they get Olivia Coleman and Tom Hardy on stage.

I mean it’s not going to fill the Prince Edward like Dear England I also loved this play and feel yours for it But transfers can’t happen magically Cast creatives and directors all need to be available and that doesn’t always align I understand your disappointment But many many successful shows don’t transfer And many do and fail badly commercially Cherish your memories of the show

Shouldn’t they be looking to tour The Witches rather than just transferring it to the WE if that’s what Parsley alludes to? It has great name recognition and potential appeal, why not let other parts of the country see it?

They've confirmed Indhu Rubasingham is starting April 1st, bit strange to start on a Tuesday rather than a Monday.
She's been director designate for a while so I assume her first season will be announced shortly after she takes over or possibly the same day.

Yes I can't understand bringing Nye back. If they wanted to fill the Olivier with returning shows, then there are so many others that would have been better. The new plays for next summer onwards look interesting, especially the Juliet Stevenson one on creative team alone. I imagine the two musicals will be the faster sellers.

Nye is returning because it sold well and I'm guessing Michael Sheen is returning and he sells tickets.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but will Rufus leave the NT having never directed a play in the Lyttelton?

Season reads a bit sentimental and personal. I note Rufus signs off as director (of Nye) after leaving post as AD.
London Road obv. a personal favourite. Some might argue Lynette Linton is as good an exemplar of the future of theatre as anyone. Going out with a stylish Sondheim, and a bunch of new work he may or may not having been lining up for a while.

I’m not very excited, another year of stuff I can easily miss. I know everyone loves new plays and we do need some good ones. It feels like we have the actors, directors and all but not the scripts. Or maybe the scripts are there and not ‘trusted’ to bring in the punters. But the NT should be about more than finding new work which as pointed out above goes better in the RC or Hampstead. Perhaps they need more PR/publicity to explain the new work. Disappointed.

I think RN feels very stung By the new plays in the Olivier at the start of his AD Which were unfavourably received From now until this time next year The Dorfman is ONLY new writing

New plays at the Olivier in the last few years: Dear England Nye Small Island The Father and the Assassin Paradise Death of England: Delroy Boys from the Blackstuff Jack Absolute Flies Again (arguably a revival) Ballet Shoes (coming up)
new musicals: The Witches Standing at the Sky's Edge
That seems fairly solid bunch to me

Not overly inspiring. I'll go to the Sondheim and probably the Rosamund Like new piece.

Not overly inspiring. I'll go to the Sondheim and probably the Rosamund Like new piece. Agreed. The Stephen Daldrey-David Lan-Juliet Stevenson collaboration is promising, though - Daldrey can pretty much direct what he wants these days, I assume. I feel the lack of a major classic with a big name actor and director - the sort of thing we're getting from the Almeida. I can't see why he is bringing Nye back - absurd decision, and why does he think the rest of the world wants to see it?! Rory Kinnear's name is mentioned in the blog but I can't see what he's going to be in. Anyone know?
