I don't mind you asking at all! Never alone. I just miss stuff I want to see - for example I really want to do the Wipers Times and my theatre buddy who comes from abroad and theatre binges has already had a ticket bought for him by another friend who didn't factor me in.  Tickets are available for the date they're going but I wouldn't consider sitting on my own. That's how much I won't go alone! 25 but in the shade I should have said! That would drive me mad, having to miss something I wanted to see because of that. I do nearly all my theatregoing on my own & have done ever since I started going regularly when I was at university. It has never bothered me, which perhaps is odd given how many other things I can't do. Why don't you see if anyone else on the board also wants to see it & you could go with them? I'm afraid it's not a piece I want to see or I'd volunteer. |

Well at least the Understudy bar had a (somewhat tenuous) connection to the theatre, like I said yesterday, if we do something similar there in the future, it might be an idea to see if a table could be booked inside prior to the event, I don't know if there is anywhere suitable a bit closer to the theatre district if people are going to or have been to a show (but then saying 'theatre district' covers a large area in London)

I didn't make it yesterday and am one of those who would not want to miss a play or show (as it is I miss things every week because they've ended and I just didn't manage to fit them in, e.g. most recently, Dirty Great Love Story and The Sorrows Of Satan); between matinee and evening would work for me provided there was a long enough gap and I didn't have to travel to/from somewhere too distant - and yesterday the locations of the 2 theatres and the time between performances simply didn't allow it. I'd always prefer somewhere quieter and with seating but as I was mocked for saying so and didn't even go yesterday, it's hardly fair for me to comment!

I'd volunteer if the date worked for me That's so nice - it would have to be a matinee as part of the reason I don't go alone is the journey home - not as far as yours but probably taking almost as long! PM me with some dates if you are able to do a matinee. |

I'm also keen to see The Wipers Times - though it is visiting Guildford in the autumn - so when and where I actually see it depends on prices and other locations if there are any.

I'd always favour somewhere quieter and with seating. It's so difficult to find somewhere that suits everyone but I will give some thought to places centrally that might work. infofreako, I could see I wasn't the only one who mentioned lack of seating and aversion to noisy background, so it's good to know that I'm not alone in my views. I originally suggested the NT foyer because it's open all day and has plenty of seating; also, it isn't a bar and needn't involve drinking whilst offering access to food and drink for those who want it. However, as above, I didn't even put in an appearance so will wait to hear which types of venues and where others would like.

I'm furtunate in that I live in London so can go to the theatre when I want and actually never go on a Saturday. Too busy in the west end.
Just a thought for a future meet up. What about a picnic? People can drop in when they can and bring some food. Then you don't have the problem of finding a venue that has space and not too noisy. If people still around later and its starting to get cool we could move indoors.
Nice little park by Embankment tube (can't think what it's called) and central for the west end.

Just a thought Embankment Gardens. A lovely spot, especially in the tulip season. However be aware that often the grass is roped off so if that were the case when the meeting was arranged then it would be difficult to find somewhere for a group to sit, as the benches are set quite far apart & it is popular so finding more than one empty bench would probably be tricky. showgirl I'm another one who wouldn't go to a meeting in a noisy bar, or indeed probably in any bar as I don't drink & dislike the smell of beer, wine, etc. |

I'm another non bar/pub/noisy place person (don't drink either and hate the smell too). I was semi interested in coming along yesterday but the thought of being inside a noisy place wasn't appealing and when you changed to being outside I was already busy doing something else. I'd be up for a picnic though if I'm free.

I think there can be a danger of overthinking these things!
I thought the Understudy worked really well as a venue. Pre-matinee it was quiet (in terms of number of people & volume!). Busy and noisy post-matinee but there's a lot of space outside. Also easy to get to most venues - people were heading off to Southwark, Victoria and the West End.
To be honest I don't think we'll find a venue anywhere that suits everybody! Probably just a case of picking somewhere a few people will turn up to and then other people can join if they can. Suggestion of the main foyer areas at the National might be worth trying. Or for a West End venue - there's the big Wetherspoon's next to the Trafalgar Studios.
Couple of suggestions
- clearly a bit of a problem for people who turned up after the initial group had left. Maybe we should set up a couple of meeting up times, pre and post matinee? I know for the first meet-up some people settled in for the day, but this isn't always going to happen.
- as suggested above, need something bigger than badges! Maybe a couple of people could print off the theatreboard logo to use as a sign.
- people at the meet-up need to post where they are on the forum, and also keep an eye out for lost people posting! Very useful for spotting Anthony in the evening, also not sure we would have spotted Dawnstar without her posts.

I've never been to the Understudy Bar, so I don't obviously know how big it is. And I wasn't at the meet up so I don't know if there were any issues like finding one another etc. But if I could offer a suggestion, when we had the first meet up in January, we didn't have any trouble finding eachother really, and I think that worked for a few reasons. It was a smaller pub. We were putting on here where we were, what table we were at, who was wearing what and if we were running late, so even if we couldn't find the group who were at a table, we could hopefully find at least one of us at the bar or somewhere else in the pub. So a communication thing ahead of time or running throughout would probably be a lot more of a help for people generally if people are doing a bigger meet up.  |

For people without an i-phone, it would be helpful if someone would agree in advance to meet and greet at a precise meeting point at a precise time (or perhaps also 15 or 30 minutes later?) Peggs said above that she, like me, had no i-phone. Otherwise, I don't think I'd risk again to attempt to attend on the off-chance of successfully guessing where you all are sitting.

I think picking a couple of key times/a volunteer to be waiting at a spot at that point could be helpful- especially for those without smartphones/international folks who may not have internet access. Also just to save a lot of blind wandering around/harassing strangers to talk about theatre!
Idea of a picnic is a nice one for the summer- a good 'drop in' activity that also doesn't require buying of drinks/food but a 'bring your own' approach. And there's a few places near Embankment Gardens that can be dashed to in the event of rain.

I'm puzzled by the emphasis on iPhones as opposed to smartphones. Though if the former can alert you to the presence of people you would rather avoid, I can see their uses!
