I've just received an email from the Royal Court saying that the front row seats I've booked are now no longer front row seats as they are putting a row in front. Which means they may be selling those seats soon. Might be worth looking out for.

I have six seats for this one Saturday in May, six for Obsession the next... I'm just worried the longer in advance I book, the more disappointing the show is (see Cumberbatch Hamlet, Binoche Antigone). |

Has Paddy Considine done any stage acting before? He's a great screen actor, but part of me thinks he might do a week or two and think 'sod this' and jump ship.

Only just realised properly that Sam Mendes is directing. Leftfield or what for the Royal Court? It'll be Michael Grandage next or Kenneth Branagh. Am I still asleep and dreaming?

I went to the Wikipedia to double-check this. I know The Ferryman is his professional stage debut, but I presumed he may well have done some things on stage, as I know that some people go straight into screen work when they turn pro but that doesn't mean they don't have a solid stage background from their training days or in amateur when they were very much younger. So I thought maybe Marwood was being a little unfair, but then I saw this quote (which made me laugh): "In 1990, Considine enrolled to do a National Diploma in Performing Arts at Burton College, where he first met Shane Meadows. Neither of them completed the course." I'm sure it'll be fine. Maybe he'll jump ship before the West End transfer, but the Royal Court run isn't even a month. I'll just keep telling myself this. |

You don't notice it. He is as great as all the others. No weak link at all. And the extras are so cute and well trained as well {Spoiler - click to view}

Loved this last night. Best play I've seen in a long time. Shades of Martin McDonagh, but with more heart. Finished at 2250. First act 1hour, second act 2hours, but flew by. Truly engrossing. As for Paddys acting the cast all seemed on an even keel. Only slight dip in pace was in the final (complicated) scene but I'm sure this'll tighten up as they go on. Wholeheartedly recommended. And yes the 'extras ' were excellent.

WOW
This is the best play I've seen for years. The running time was over 3 hours but I didn't notice for one second. Totally captivating from the start. Excellent performances by everyone, particular Laura Donnelly and Paddy Considine.
I actually preferred it to Jerusalem, there is one scene later in the play with Paddy C and Genevieve O'Reilly that blew me away.
The 'surprises' elements are all great and the design is wonderful.
I suspect this will be one monster of a hit.
Plays this good don't come around very often.
I've booked straight away for the transfer.

I am not remotely surprised by the early praise for this; I read an unfinished (was 95% done - the very end was described rather than written) draft of this late last year and it was fairly clear then that if the production was half-decent then the play was going to be a modern classic. Am seeing it in May, and again for the transfer.

It's a delfont mackintosh theatre and the tickets are on their site delfontmackintosh.co.uk There is lots of availability later in the run. I have just booked.

Show report (Preview)
Programmes: Highly recommend the £3 script/programme.
Running time: As mentioned above. 3 hours 15, with one 15 minute interval after one hour, and a 'pause' about an hour after that.
Anything go wrong: A few technical hiccups including a radio that just didn't want to be turned off. A clumsy in vision set change.
Children/animals: Yes. Some particularly good child actors, charming/funny.
Acting: Yes, a lot of it.
Script: Think Chekhov mixed with Friel and a bit of McDonagh.
Audience: Rapturous, though largely seated, response afterwards.
Highlights: First act when more and more characters appear. Party with music. What a luxury to have such a big cast.
Anyone stand out: Brid Brennan (though due to how she was placed on stage, far downstage right, we could hardly see her from our Circle seats) had a beautiful speech. I really liked Tom Glynn-Carney as Shane Corcoran and Laura Donnelley as Caitlin Carney. Stuart Graham has a beautiful voice. Deabghla Molloy packed some wallop as Aunt Pat.
Take away: Ireland - it's complicated.
5* Loved it and think it will get even better.

I see it has a 'trigger warning' on the RC site (or maybe they all do, in these PC days). Can anyone who's seen it please confirm (in spoiler format) if there's anything icky in it? Will help me with my decision whether or not to book!
