In March this year an American production (so in English) of Pippin ran for 5 weeks at Theater Carré in Amsterdam. They then said they'd make "Broadway aan de Amstel" a annual concept and they said they'd try to announce the next show before the summer of 2016. They haven't so far, but I tweeted them and their reply suggested that it would still happen. Any ideas what shows could be contenders? I was thinking about possible Something Rotten or The Color Purple? Any other ideas?

My first guess is still Book of Mormon - I just can't imagine this show in another language than English (yes, I know, they're doing it in Sweden in Swedish now, but ugh) and I'm also not sure that this could work successfully as a tour in the Netherlands, so bringing it over as an English-language tour to the multi-cultural open-minded city of Amsterdam sounds like a good idea to me. I'd be fine with Something Rotten too and personally I'd love to see the Colour Purple (having missed it at the Menier) but I thnk it's too heavy a topic to attract a bigger audience. Would have been something for M-Lab maybe. Kinky Boots is presently on tour, so that may also be an option? I'd hate for it to be something lame like Motown - the Musical or Beautiful. Though at least that would save me the money for another weekend trip to Amsterdam

I can't imagine it will be something epic like something rotten, colour purple, book of mormon or so. I mean sales for pippin weren't going great, and I think that despite it's the whole purpose of Broadway aan de Amstel, they're afraid of booking something that's only known by die hard theatre go-ers.
So I think the chances are bigger its a Priscilla tour (I mean no one cares about Priscilla really, but they got themself a stage at the Uitmarkt), again a JCS/Ted Neeley thing or an old name. As new names and the Netherlands lately don't do much good, and we're too good at bringing revivals

They had the English Priscilla tour not long ago so am not expecting that. With the return of JCS this Christmas they did it would be a while before it will return.
I do think Book of Mormon would be an option. It is a big name known by not musical fans too. I am really curious what is going to happen as Pippin did not run very well so they really have to come up with something bigger this time

How well did the Priscilla tour sell in Amsterdam? Was it successful enough to warrant a return? Mind you - we had tickets for the Sunday afternoon performance after the terrorist attack on Le Bataclan in Paris on Friday evening and we were really a little bit worried about going. In the end we were glad we did as it helped to overcome the initial fear for other attacks in theatres. But I wonder if people were put off going to the theatre for a while.
I think Book of Mormon would sell well enough. Dutch audiences (in my experience) are fairly open-minded when it comes to new shows and BoM can be marketed as the huge smash hit from Broadway, written by the South Park people and so on. It's a whole other calibre than Pippin which was really just a somewhat creative revival of an old show that was never really a big hit anywhere.
I wonder if people were put off by the lack of surtitles? You are so used to them in cinemas and on television, people may have been struggling to follow Pippin without. But honestly, while I didn't mind having seen it (after some people praised it to the skies on Broadway) and never mind spending a weekend in Amsterdam (sometimes we just drive to and fro for the day but in this case we had booked a hotel, spent some time wandering around, shopping, having nice meals, etc.) Pippin just wasn't very good in the end and I wouldn't necessarily have people that it's a must-see they shouldn't miss.

I don't think it will be BoM or Kinky because they're both currently on in London, which is quite close to Amsterdam. I expect them to go with something that isn't currently or hasn't recently been on in London. Perhaps a production of Finding Neverland before the West End?

I don't think that's really a problem because the fact that they've always had subtitles also means they've always been confronted with English and learn it by watching films an Tv as opposed to French, Germans, Spanish, Italians who dub everything and aren't confronted with English that often.

I actually know quite a few people who did not go to Pippin because there were no surtitles. And not only the older people.
Priscilla did pretty well but not sure if it is time already to have it back.

Oh, I didn't know there were that many people who weren't able to understand it. Maybe they should get surtitles then. It's doesn't really have a negative impact for the people who do understand it, so why not. Although even though I have no problem understanding whatsoever, I do feel that if the subtitles are there for some reason I automatically read them, which sucks because I then spend more time staring at the screen than watching the actual show

On a related note, I just found out that the American Tour of West Side Story is going to The Netherlands in late 2017 until early 2018. It's not the Broadway aan the Amstel program, so it seems there will be 2 American productions in The Netherlands next year.
