Hello all, I'm more from the cabaret side of showbiz and now lean more to technical (sound and lights) than performing, why do some people object to a green light is it some sort of theatre taboo like the Mc******** thing ?

I know green is a colour with some superstition attached. People shouldn't have green costumes (sorry, cast of Wicked), and the idea of the green room is that it's to keep all the green together and nowhere near the stage. I don't know why the superstitious originally took against green, and I don't know if the green light thing is necessarily linked, but there is superstition around the colour green in a theatre.

I would have thought that the success of Wicked pretty much debunks any and every theory relating to green being bad luck in a theatre. Utter bunkum.
The tradition of saying "break a leg" instead of "good luck" on the other hand is backed up with sound, scientific fact and disaster will befall any luvvie who fails to follow it.

I remember seeing SRB doing a Q and A where he got very edgy about people mentioning the Scottish play. Not sure how he managed when he was in it

Ok, so my geeky self has looked into this before!
Back in the mists of time you had to have all the colours of the rainbow in costume and on stage to appease the fairy folk!
With the advent of roofed buildings you needed light, unfortunately gas and lime don't like the colour GREEN, it becomes muddy and disappears. To keep the fairy folk happy a room backstage was painted GREEN so all the colours of the rainbow were still in the building!
So, it's not to do with green light at all!
