I'm excited- and glad they went for an actual expert rather than a 'name'. I don't know of her either but her credentials look great! Also nice to have another woman on the panel. Brave call by the beeb tho. Not many will have heard of her at all and to be parachuted in as head judge! She is british, born on the Wirral. Imagine footage of her and the delightfully named Corky will be played again and again😊

I thought if they went with a Latin/Ballroom expert and not a 'name' then someone else would be 'promoted' to head judge! Nice little piece on news at 6...aside from some awkward dancers in the background!

Exactly. I hadn't heard of Len before the show.
She looks nice, but in the extremely brief clip they showed on the 6 o'clock news her voice sounded annoying. Am prepared to be proved wrong though because as I say the clip was extremely brief.

V good point but thank goodness they didn't choose one of the celebs they have had in the show or a current 'name' on the telly circuit or a kids' presenter.. 😁 And hey, whisper it people, two women on judges' panel ? 🍾 So beats University Challenge. 😂😂😂

Excellent news - Shirley is a great dancer and knows her stuff, which is all I was hoping for from whoever was appointed the new judge!
It does leave the show without any ballroom expert judges though (Shirley is a Latin American champion), and Anton as the only ballroom specialist pro now Natalie has quit, which is a bit annoying!

So you are thinking they will do more Latin? It was going that way last series with precious little ballroom til the middle of the series. And then heavily themed.

I don't think they'll do more Latin - I doubt the dances will change unless they decide to introduce something like merengue - but I think the judges will be more lax on ballroom technique. I'm sure Shirley probably learnt traditional International Standard ballroom when she first learned to dance, but she's been based in the US for years, and their version of ballroom is slightly different to what's taught here. Given pretty much all the pros are now Latin specialists (or Salsa/Mambo) and a lot of them have danced in the US, I expect all the ballroom dances will become more like they are on DWTS, where the traditional Strictly rules go out the window and every dance is basically what used to be categorised as an American Smooth.

I'm a bit sad for Anton not getting the judge job, but as others have said it's great that there'll now be two women on the panel. Maybe they could retire Bruno at the end of the next series and slot Anton in then. I know he's not everyone's cup of tea (but then who is), he can't carry on being a pro forever - or can he?! ;-)

Maybe they could retire Bruno at the end of the next series Get thee to a nunnery! How very dare you suggest such a thing... (Anyway, he'd be in a queue behind Zoe and Tess as far as I'm concerned.)

Anton always gets the ahem, older lady and it's all v proper. They should give him a real hot babe. He can dance! Of course an older lady can be a hot babe too ( Mde Macron ?) but you know what I mean.

Should we have a new thread for the next season? Or do people prefer to continue this one?
Thoughts?

Combined threads are confusing (e.g. Love in Idleness & Lettice and Lovage) so I vote for a New Thread.

Such a shame Joanne and Natalie have quit - there are no ballroom specialists on the show at all now Not that I blame either of them, the show is less about the actual art of dancing with every year that passes, and Jo has won so doesn't really have any incentive to stay.

Disappointing that Oksana didn't get more than one series. I knew Natalie was going (still sad though).
Never liked Joanne's choreography so I won't miss her.

Monday morning begins the ridiculous drip feeding of contestants, first one on Grimmy's Radio 1 show which, to be blunt, I cannot imagine the typical Strictly viewer ever listening to. I personally hate this system as it always feels a bit of an anti climax if it's someone I've never heard of/dislike. I'd prefer a reveal show where they give us them all in one whack so I can focus on the positives and put the negatives out of my mind. Moans aside....I cannot wait and hope there are loads of people I like or who make me like them in the process.

Is there anyone that would stop people watching?

Is there anyone that would stop people watching? There couldn't be anyone who would stop me watching entirely as I'm too much of a dance addict for that. However there is almost always someone who leads me to mute the TV and go and make tea while they're on - Ann Widdecombe, Paul Daniels and Judge Rinder to name but a few...

Yes. Him without the nice bum we discussed on the unpopular opinions thread earlier....just kidding.
Only She Who Shall Not Be Named made of plastic rumoured for the Ice programme would stop me watching.
Great question. Anyone else got any?

I've heard rumours of Nigel Farage and he would definitely stop me watching.
