The lineup for the BFI London Film Festival has been announced and the selection is pretty decent this year. Annoyingly because I'm abroad for some of the festival, I won't be able to catch The Room Next Door, Maria, Nightbitch, We Live in Time and Joy. Saturday Night, the SNL film isn't playing which is odd because it'd do well as a festival film but could be added later, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is another omission. whatson.bfi.org.uk/lff/Online/ |

Have had a thorough look through the brochure and there are lots of films that look interesting. I've got a membership after only managing to book one film last year when they went on general sale.
I am so excited for Mike Leigh's new film Hard Truths, I can't remember the last time I've had so much anticipation for a film.
Other things high on my radar are The End, Blitz,2073 and Motherboard.

Always quite love rocking up and just watching whatever's on whenever the film festival is on. Usually there's a seat or two free for the more esoteric material (which I love)

Going to do my usual of trying to cram in as many films as I can over the week and a half, but particularly excited for Anora, Queer, Nightbitch, We Live In Time and A Real Pain.

Bit daunting to put at the back of a queue of 7000 people but availability seemed ok for what I looked at and I’ve gone for just two films: The Surfer starring Nicolas Cage at the Prince Charles and Conclave starring Ralph Fiennes at the RFH the night after.

It took me just over an hour to get through but I managed to get most of the films I was wanting and booked others that looked interesting too. Overall have eleven films booked and I look forward to the festival starting!

Really hoping there is availability for these two! Thankfully my local Broadway cinema is showing some of the films (I have already booked Blitz and Conclave).

As of right now the stalls for Maria are sold out however most of the balcony has tickets available. With Queer, the stalls is maybe about 80% sold but again the balcony has a most of the seats available. Hopefully there will be some left for general sale. |

Well that was fun earlier. Managed to get tickets to eight films on my wishlist, including most of the galas I was most hoping to see and two special presentations. However several films I was hoping to see that were playing in the smaller screens were sold out by the time I got on the site, so I will keep checking for those.

More £10 tickets have just been made available for some of the first gala and special presentation screenings in the Royal Festival Hall, including Elton John Never Too Late, Bird, Emilia Perez, Hard Truths, Joy, Endurance, (back of the balcony) Harvest (Rows K&J of the front stalls), The Piano Lesson (Rows E to H of the front Stalls), Nickel Boys (Rows B&C of the front Stalls) and I'm Still Here (Row B of the front Stalls and M of the Balcony).

Probably less likely than with a film, but keep checking the website to see if any tickets pop up. Or you can try rushing the talk on the day (I saw someone on X/Twitter say they successfully rushed the Martin Scorsese talk last year). |

Saw The Surfer tonight at the Prince Charles (I’ll say a few words about it in The Last Film You Saw thread but surprise, it wasn’t great): no sign of Nic Cage but I wasn’t expecting that, he didn’t show up for the LFF screening of Bad Lieutenant either, although the director Lorcan Finnegan made an appearance: we’ve been promised an introduction to Conclave tomorrow from its director Edward Berger, I’m not sure if tomorrow nights performance of Giant is taking place as John Lithgow is in it and might make an appearance.

Tonight’s screening of Conclave tonight, not only Edward Berger but Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini were there too. To be honest I was a bit disappointed with this, it’s all impeccably acted (Fiennes has to speak a lot of Latin and never slips into Rigsby mode) but by the time it ended, the final reveal was all a bit ho hum and stretched credibility that bit too far.

Blitz - 3 stars
There is nothing particularly new here and I found this to be quite an old fashioned movie. Soairse Ronan is exceptional as always but I found the ending a little abrupt and it didn't quite have the impact I was hoping for. It needed padding out a bit more.
Conclave - 5 stars
Probably one of the best films I have seen in a long time. Excellent performance from Ralph Fiennes, amazing cinematography and score and a few laugh out loud moments.
Anora - 3 stars
Perfectly fine way to spend a Saturday night with friends but this drags on for far too long. I'm seeing a lot of Oscars buzz around this online with anticipated nominations for best picture and best actress, neither of which I feel are particularly justified. Very slapstick and it wasn't received particularly well from the audience based on post-screen chat. Although I did laugh at the parting comment from the lady behind me who shouted 'spoilt b*tch' (in reference to the main character) before leaving the cinema.
Next week: We Live in Time, Queer and Maria.

I’m looking forward to Nightbitch as it has such a weird premise. Sorry to hear that Blitz was mid, Steve McQueen is such a phenomenal talent that I expected it to be more groundbreaking.
Edit: Btw, I got a Villeneuve ticket in the end and although it was mostly a rehash of the interviews he’s given about Dune, it was great to see him in person.

Have to agree with solotheatregoer Blitz was disappointing, it's all very well done and the set pieces are impressive, but the overall storyline and setup is nothing original. The Elton John documentary is fine, but it's a bit too burnishing-the-Elton-myth. Will absolutely find its place on Disney+. Rumours was fun if completely bonkers and not really knowing what point it wants to make, and while I wouldn't say this in a certain other thread on this board, Cate Blanchett was absolutely lovely at the Q&A afterwards, even if she did attract a strange number of devoted fans who just wanted to tell her how much they loved her. Favourite so far is probably Four Mothers, a fairly low-key Irish film which almost inspired me to do the same thing for James McArdle at that Q&A as others did at the Rumours Q&A. A warm, funny film that just managed to stay the right side of tweeness. Doubt it will still be at the top by the end of the week though. |

I've been to five so far and have seven more to go.
La Cocina- This was my first film of the festival. It is based on Arnold Weskers play 'The Kitchen'. This film certainly had some stand out moments in the middle and final scenes however there were also moments where I wasn't as drawn in. Certainly interesting to see a mid century British play adapted for the big screen and its relocation to New York and focusing on immigrants worked very well.
Blitz- Well I really liked this. It is epic and a real spectacle with a story that I found very compelling. The acting is all very good, and it did have moments where I was shocked.
Blink- This has been my favourite film so far. A utterly wonderful but emotional documentary about two parents taking their children on a trip around the world as three of the four children have a degenerative eye condition. I would whole heartily recommend this one either at the cinema or when it is on Disney.
The Wild Robot- This is a very enjoyable family film, in similar vain to Walle. Beautifully animated too.
Motherboard- Very much the weakest film so far. A documentary I feel very unsure on and one that felt a little too pretentious for me.

I am amused that the recent BFI Southbank revamp has required BFI staff to cover up the new "Door 1" and "Door 2" signs at NFT1 given that the tickets still say "Door 3" and "Door 4"...
(As an aside, the loos revamp next to NFT1 seems to have been something of a failure given the queue outside the ladies loos virtually all the time. Given that the gents and ladies have swapped places, maybe there should have been more of an effort to add more loos altogether - the problem is that NFT1 was designed with half the audience entering at the front of the auditorium, but now that the only access is from the top those loos at the back get an awful lot of use...)
Still, the new seating and entrance at NFT3 are nice.
