Do the bats on wires still fly over the audience at the end? nope. No bats. The cadillac moment in "Paradise..." has been changed too

We are back from a long round trip to see Bat in Manchester this afternoon. Lots of changes to process... but I had forgotten how much sheer joy it gives me and am very grateful they were able to get this tour off the ground after everything that happened.

It may of been a long time coming for BOOH to make a comeback to the UK, but after tonight’s show, it’s all coming back to me now why I love this show, Jim Steinman has left a fantastic legacy of great music to listen to and what a great cast and band to deliver them on stage, Overall. I felt the rewriting of the book has certainly improved the flow of the show. The original book felt clunky in places such as the start of Act 2, but this version makes more sense and I’m glad it’s been done. The original Act 2 opening number (“in the land of the pigs the butcher is king”)for me didn’t work and felt out of place and I’m not a big fan of the song anyway so I’m glad it’s been cut here. Though it’s a shame that “Good Girls Go To Heaven” has also been cut as I enjoyed that number in the original version.
I loved the replacement stunts here and how they are used. I appreciate the original versions would of been more difficult to do with a touring set.
Cast wise, Glen Adamson makes a great Strat bringing a lot of energy to the role. Martha Kirby as Raven, wow, what a belting voice this lady has. I’m so glad Rob Fowler and Sharon Sexton have returned to reprise their original roles. These two really are great to watch and listen to on stage.
Despite the request not to sing along, we did get plenty of audience singing particularly in Act 2, but compared to some jukebox shows, tonight wasn’t too bad and thankfully didn’t drown out the cast’s singing.
I’m seeing the show again in Liverpool so I’ll be booking a matinee performance during the week to see the alternate Strat as a comparison.

What opens act two now?

It said 10 seconds later, and opened back at the Falcos with Sloane pacing around. Raven comes back, Falco and Zahara come in, Zahara with Strat’s bloody t-shirt telling everyone that Strat is dead.
I really liked In The Land Of The Pig, so I am a bit gutted it’s gone but this part of the book does work better overall.
What I’ve been contemplating since seeing it yesterday though were the small changes to Tink’s storyline and the fact that the (excellent) actor who plays him seems to be much talller than some of the lost and it’s hard to believe he has been frozen at a much younger age because of that!

Does it run even shorter then? Wow, they’ll be nothing left of it (but I never liked that song so won’t miss it). This would’ve been an excellent opportunity to insert ‘Original Sin’ as a trio between Falco, Sloane & Raven.

They did Good Girls as an extra at the end in previews and on press night, but sadly that had gone by my first visit which is a shame.

Sigh…have accidentally booked a seat for Oxford as I can’t wait til Bristol next August! I have one for the Saturday Oxford matinee already, but I took the oldest to Manchester yesterday and now the youngest is sulking that I didn’t take them, so am contemplating booking another Manchester Saturday matinee. Unfortunately I can only do weekends so that rules out going up weekdays unfortunately.

This may change, but I’ve been told that Sam is likely to do Thursday evenings and Saturday matinees so not worth booking a midweek mat if you’re looking to see him specifically. I saw him yesterday afternoon - good grief he can sing! I’m also still mulling over some of the changes - a lot are good, or at least understandable as the spectacle of the original production was never going to be able to tour. I’m not convinced about one particular change though … Tink not dying made the whole show feel a lot more light hearted, but not in a good way. Combined with the loss of Land of the Pig (which I do understand) it gave me the same sense of dissatisfaction that comes from reading an epic fantasy series where in the end they defeat the big bad and everyone lives happily ever after. It feels like there are no consequences, and removes the impact of Rock and Roll Dreams. Sorry Tink, I love you, but you need to die.

Thanks alison for the info about Sam. I’m only able to sat matinees so I’m planning on doing a double BOOH day when the tour comes to Liverpool next year so hopefully catch Sam then. Mulling over my thoughts this morning about the show, I agree with your spoiler point. On another note, when did “It just won’t quit” get cut?

Absolutely agree about Tink not dying now, and it felt like some of the poignancy in Rock And Roll Dreams has been lost
I’m not sure yet either about the redemption of Falco at the end. I get that they can’t have a pool with the touring set, but the coming out changed after an almost baptism in water worked so well, whereas being what looked like beaten up by The Lost seemed like they just resorted to the same behaviours he’d shown
I really need to try and see this again before Oxford as that feels like ages away!

It Just Won’t Quit was taken out near the end of the London Coliseum run. I was glad I saw the show just before then because it’s a gorgeous version.

Looks like stopping in the Manchester Opera House for 4 weeks was a bit ambitious. Barley any seats sold weekday performances. Not sure how the rest of the tour has sold?

They haven’t dropped the prices though have they… seriously I’d go while it was in Manc but I’ve already seen it twice and I’m not paying full whack. ATG would rather it be a third full than discount it, apparently.

Seriously? 4 weeks at Manchester Opera House then Stockton?!

They’ve already reduced 2 weeks in Oxford to 1, I suspect there may be some other trimming of dates here and there.
Isn’t it the same for a lot for tours at the moment tho?

I reckon they would’ve been better of doing 1 week everywhere instead of a mix of 1 and 2 weeks across the schedule. Can’t see them filling up some of these venues for 2 weeks.

Never mind upper circles, they’re charging £65 top stalls for Monday nights. I usually go for second price and they want £58 for those with a pathetic fiver off for theatrecard. I’m not paying £53 to sit in an empty Theatre on a Monday night to see a cut back version of something I paid less for on its original run. Discount midweek, get some buzz going around it and there’s better chance of Thursday to Saturday selling at full price.
