The amount of money that this has lost is the nail in the coffin of a cast recording. I suppose the only hope is possibly a live one

Cast recording costs, due to the fact that they rarely make their money back, are often built into the initial budget for marketing purposes. While you can't use one to promote a show that is closed, you can use it to build interest for future productions. Any show that wants to be licensed for those reasons usually makes a cast recording. Nearly every bomb of the past couple of seasons has been recorded and given that Elton has deep pockets and may want it preserved, my hope is that we will see one.

Yeah, while I know that it's mostly built into the initial budget, when you've lost $25m... we'll see. A cast album is a marketing method and the costs amount to around a million or so for a cast recording these days, possibly more for the rights involved.
Licensed shows usually have reference/rehearsal tracks that come with them so people who don't fully read sheet music can still go off those references because cast recordings typically aren't full score. That's probably what would be produced next if anything.
Definitely do want a recording though.
