Cast recording now out (and on Spotify).
Such a shame this never made it to Broadway. The music is wonderful.

If I understood it correctly, Disney have released amateur rights for Hunchback, so there might be Fringe productions coming up.
However, I'm not quite sure if I'd enjoy such. The score needs a big orchestra (including strings and a wind section) and, preferably, a choir, too. I just went through my programme from the La Jolla Playhouse production I saw in November 2014, and they had an orchestra of 16 - and a local choir.

It certainly is a mystery why they didn't take it to New York, I'm pretty sure I read it was bound for there originally. I think it could have sold exceptionally well for a limited season

I think that was the original plan. Have the American premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse, rework it, have another production at the Paper Mill Playhouse, further rework it and then open on Broadway.
Both the La Jolla Playhouse and Paper Mill Playhouse productions did happen, but for some reason, Disney haven't brought it to Broadway. My best guess is that they deemed Frozen to be a bigger commercial success. For a Disney show, Hunchback is unusually dark, and not as child friendly as other shows.
I for one hope that Hunchback will eventually make it to Broadway.

It is one of those pieces that has been fighting for a chance to be staged for years. I have a copy of the original score from the German production and I think it also did ok in Holland - but has never had the big English language production that it deserves.
There are staging challenges to overcome - but I suspect it is the fact that the original movie was not hugely popular (though still one of my favourites) and that it is darker than the average cartoon that has held it back.
Shame as it is a great story told well

It'll shortly be available for amateur and semi-amateur productions. They worked it up to a standard that it could function as a standalone musical and then license it to interested companies. They figure it'll make more money this way than a full Broadway production, which they probably thought wouldn't last long. I'm sure they punched in the numbers and thought it was more commercially viable to go with this direction instead of a Broadway mounting.

Is there a link to the story about the release of the amateur rights?

Thanks for the links - will wait to see if any UK announcements are made. It will be through Weinberger's over here and there is nothing hinted at from them at this stage.
It is a show I would be keen to direct - hence the keen interest!

Bit harsh. They just acknowledged release. Don't let being a mod go to your head.

Hunchback has always been one of my absolute favourite Disney films and I've had this cast recording on preorder for a while. Apart from Topsy Turvy pt 1 missing from my iTunes I am really enjoying this. Such an epic feel to it and the new songs fit in beautifully. Would love to have seen this show.
