Why would they mime? They are trained actors not pop singers who can't even hold a tune. They did mime, Ain’t Too Proud mimed their whole set, people on twitter said Melody did too but I’d have to watch it back. Yes sorry. Ignore me I read it as "why did so few acts mime" rather than "why did a few".

I don't think the oliviers would have the same impact. Awards in general are declining in popularity with viewers, and there is so much inflated filler and things most don't care about with award shows. Plus the whole self congratulatory nature. They also only feature shows that are up for awards or opened (and even already closed) that year This kind of celebration with big number after big number of shows people can see I think has more energy and impact. Agree. Plus Oliviers can be a bit elitist. Most of the nominated shows and plays would not be known by a lot of people, whereas this show was full of well known shows and high octave entertainment.

] Nathania being incredible yet again. She needs to be much more well known and get some bigger roles She graduated in 2021, went straight into Be More Chill, then into Les Mis, she’s done pretty well so far, and I’d say Eponine is pretty big. Why did a few acts mime on this? So odd. Hadestown. I hope the casting/producers see her.

Yes I agree, plus they're very London centric. What the bbc does is show plenty of shows much more of the country can get to seeing.

Maybe I just need to put my glasses on but to me it appeared the newsies cast weren’t actually wearing tap shoes? Anyone else notice this?

I suspect that Dev from Corrie may have directed the Shrek segment. Very broad strokes.

“Broadway legend Darren Lee”
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Who?!
Helen George’s voice was better than I expected , but didn’t love her acting choices
Jason Manford doing From Now on was one of the most toe curling things I’ve ever watched. Those jazz handsy kids !

I doubt they miked the stage in Manchester.

ITV showed Olivier highlights at 9pm a few years back and it bombed, awards show on TV generally get low audiences so showing the Oliviers live would be a disaster.

Wasn’t too enthused about this from the lineup, but actually really enjoyed it. Suffered from the usual problems of hyperactive editing and showing the audience as much as the stage, but overall I think it did a much better job of showcasing musical theatre than the Oliviers ever do.

Enjoyed watching this tonight.
The ensemble numbers, namely Newsies, Hamilton and Matilda, seemed to get a bit lost in the edit, while Defying Gravity and On My Own (both solos, of course) came across much stronger and coherent.
The audience didn’t bother me as it was performed in a 12,000 capacity venue and not a theatre space. It was more a case of musical theatre performers putting on a gig, from what I could tell, and the audiences acted accordingly.

Can anyone help me locate The Bodyguard tour thread please? Keen to see it after Melody’s performance last night and have a question but can’t find the thread to post it in! Thanks in advance.

There is a subsidised scheme being announced on Monday morning off the back of this in which people can (very straightforwardly) claim a free £25 Theatre Token to spend at participating venues (current list is approx 200 venues) Thanks for the heads up on this! Just had an email about it and have got my voucher already!

I enjoyed this. Some horrible timing with the miming though (unless this was just a delay with the iPlayer feed). And the new version of King of New York looked really odd, but I appreciate it's a very different shaped stage and the things they do in Wembley just aren't possible. Good that this show is becoming an annual tradition and they managed to promote touring shows as well as those appearing on the main stage.

Enjoyed Hamilton but most of the shows we've seen many times before or have been around forever. Would like to see some lesser mainstream performances. How many times will we see Six??? It's like listening to Elaine Paige most weeks!!

I found this much more enjoyable than last year's version! A considerable improvement.
Though the Lottery-flavoured "isn't gambling lovely giving all this money to good causes?" mask does not sit well with me...

Shrek looked horrendous. I wish Six would sing a different song, but I understand why they always sing the Finale.

Yes, I know they did but I mean instead of the finale. Like I said, I understand why.
