am I wrong to have grumbled loudly at a screening of Elvis last night when the houselights snapped on the second the first end credit appeared, taking us out of those moving few minutes somewhat abruptly. Being in the business, I will always stay and watch every last credit out of respect, and who knows there may be a sting at the end, but also there's a lot of craft in the end titles and music that reflects what has gone before. theatres would never bring up the house lights during a live curtain call. very disrespectful in my book.

Spot on. Hate it too.
My local Odeon (Nuneaton) is excellent. The lights for the credits only go up about 10% and even that doesn't happen until the cast list has passed, where that is first on the end crawl. Occasionally, there's a new member of staff who forgets to check that everyone has left before putting the cleaning lights on, but a friendly chat puts them right.
The worst offender is the Phoenix in Leicester who have absolutely no regard for cinema aficionados and zero customer service. They whack on the full and blinding cleaning lights automatically the moment the credits start and actually start cleaning around you and chatting to one another. If this were a Vue you might not be surprised, but it's an art-house venue.
Years ago, I used to be the only person who would sit through the end credits. Now there are often dozens. I agree that it's about appreciating the music. It's also a time to come down from the heightened intensity of the movie.

I recall when I saw the Live Action Beauty and the Beast at our then new Showcase cinema the full (cleaning?) lights went on during the credits! I jumped out of my seat.
The worst was at Vue at the screening of Miss Saigon. There was a little gap between the finish and the planned encores so just as Kim was dying the staff wheeled in their popcorn and snack trolley ready to start selling! I could have killed them!

The lights should go up when rolling credits start, but sometimes on the first frame of credits, which I agree is too quick. They're mostly automated now so the lights will be set to come up at the time given by distribution for start of credits.
