Sir Tim Rice is on tour again in 2024!
I booked for 2nd May 2024 at the Liverpool Playhouse.
Oddly enough I can't find a full tour list anywhere.

Just been to 'Tim Rice: My Life In Musicals' at the Liverpool Playhouse, and it was an absolutely wonderful evening!
He's a great story teller!
There were four fantastic performers too:
John Addison
Katie Birtill
Shonagh Daly
Sandy Grigelis
And a great band!

Just been to 'Tim Rice: My Life In Musicals' at the Liverpool Playhouse, and it was an absolutely wonderful evening! He's a great story teller! There were four fantastic performers too: John Addison Katie Birtill Shonagh Daly Sandy Grigelis And a great band! I was there myself. A great evening of music and storytelling celebrating the career of Sir Tim. |

Tim has always been a very witty man and a wonderful wordsmith with his lyrics so to have him talk through his ideas and thought process behind the songs was a wonderful idea.

For someone who was not there, did he discuss the 'yearning song'?
I once saw a television documentary where they were interviewing songwriters and lyricists and when interviewing Tim Rice he explained that writing for musical theatre was in a different league and there a method to it whereby about two or songs into the show the protagonist sings a song where there true intentions are revealed to the audience via the 'yearning song' which moves the story forward.
So, in The Little Mermaid, it's Part Of Your World; in Beauty & The Beast, it's the reprise of Belle, etc

It's a surefire formula. People tend to diss Tim Rice for being 'obvious' but his 'I want' songs are pretty subtly done under the veneer of the music. Everything's Alright, Buenos Aires from his first two released major works are 'I want' songs even though they don't sound like the stereotypical 'I want' fare, musically and lyrically. Hopefully should be seeing this soon! |

I was stalls D4. As a concert I thought it was great to hear a great selection of his songs again and to get some information about the back stories into how the different shows and / songs came about was an added bonus. Considering that alot of those songs are 40yrs old or older, they have stood the test of time for me. He did mention that he was hoping to get CHESS back on the stage in the US next year. I loved the fact that despite being a EGOT winner, the award he was most proud of was his BBC “Pointless” award! anthony40 - Tim certainly talked about his thought processes when writing his songs whether for stage / screen. |

Tim's biography in various theatre programs was always quite self deprecating where his achievements listed his Knighthood, Oscar, Tonys etc but also when he scored a half century in a cricket match as he has always been a huge cricket fan.
A real deep dive on Tim I remember is a South Bank Show episode from around Christmas 1985 when he talked about his career to date then and how the idea of Evita came from listening to a radio programme about Eva Peron when he was driving somewhere. He also confessed to being a frustrated rock'n'roller and performed a song accompanied by Hank Marvin on guitar.
I haven't seen this programme since it was broadcast but it might be online somewhere if anyone fancies looking for it.

A little side note, a couple of years back when there was the Bonnie & Clyde concert on at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane with Jeremy Jordan, Tim Rice and a much younger female- possibly his daughter or a relative was sitting about three rows in front of me and he was openly admitting that he no idea about this show or any of the actors in it. |

Looking back at Sir Tim's long and successful career. I found it surprising that the version of Aida that he and Sir Elton wrote has never been staged in the West End given it ran for over 1,850 performances on Broadway and considering who wrote it.
