Shall we have a thread to share any theatre-y stuff on TV over the festive season? Or just what festive TV we’re excited for in general?
The lack of a Doctor Who special will be a huge hole in my Christmas Day.
Looking forward to seeing Mark Gatiss’ “A Christmas Carol Ghost Story” on BBC4 (filmed stage version). Sky Arts are usually good for a few theatre things but haven’t announced any yet.
And James Graham on the Christmas University Challenge.

Not sure how final they are but the BBC 1 and 2 listings can be seen here: ukchristmastv.weebly.com/bbc-2022.html Only had a quick skim, but BBC1 mostly just stuff that’s on all year round only with added Disney and Pixar films. BBC2 more interesting IMHO with a bunch of old musical films, the Broadway Newsies, the new film of Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker, Coppelia, the Sondheim concert. |

Detectorists, Sondheim, Christmas Carol and Copeila for me. I haven't seen what the big BBC dramas are yet, they are usually worth a watch.
Dead Ringers (radio 4) have a 3 part Special which started last night.

Given the Radio Times came out today I'd expect they're pretty solid by now. Oh, I thought it’d probably be next week before they were out. I added that because I remember we used to keep the free TV guides they’d print in the papers in early December and by Christmas came they were usually wrong. 😂 |

Last year the Christmas Radio Times was about five quid. Will give it a miss!

Other than that, will be very much as the mood takes me.

At a quick glance the vast majority of programmes especially on BBC2 are repeats.
Gone are the days when you sat at home with the Radio Times circling everything you wanted to watch and then lining up your videos ready to record and then programmes overlapping so you had to choose one or the other. And your mum getting up in the middle of the night to check that the video had turned itself off from a late night recording. She always used to think the house would catch fire if the video stayed on overnight.

What younger TB members won't realise is that back in ye olden days, the Radio Times only listed the schedules for BBC tv and radio. For ITV, you had to also buy a copy of the TV Times and cross reference the two publications.
My favourite part was the holiday brochure section at the back. You could order, for example, brochures for Butlins, Pontins and Hoseasons...all for the price of a single stamp.

The book is set in and the drama was filmed in the part of the world in which I grew up, so I'm looking forward to seeing it, but having read the book I can't imagine it's going to be particularly festive. |

Side note but there's a new musical based on Mayflies being premiered in York in April/May. Written by Gus Gowland, who also wrote Pieces of String which was streamed in lockdown.
