Performances, script and direction are far more important than the scenery or costumes for me. I often see people on here bemoaning the sets or garb of the latest productions.
Personally, I don't care. So long as the clothes stay on and the scenery stays upright then I'm not going to notice it if I'm actually invested in the show.

Blood Brothers I did like but when I saw it at the Phoenix it felt and looked tired. Plus one on this. Saw it this weekend at the Lyceum in Sheffield. Felt that some parts of it were so overacted, that they became funny when they shouldn't have been. Also, as good as Lyn Paul may have been, she is really too old for the role now and makes the role a little less believable. I don't know if it has always been like this, but the synth drums just sound awful and are cringeworthy. I thought the drummer was going to break out into the EastEnders theme at one point...

Is it not written in scripture; "Thou shalt honour thy Sondheim and Webber" "There is only one Wicked and thou shalt honour and revere it." "Those who make graven idols of European theatre above that of the native land shall wither and perish on the vine" "Mixing modern fibres with that of the ancient master is an abomination" "Pay unto thy master the Rent which is due, even if it is a pile of boring, over blown poo". I'm only trying to save souls here people.

Back to unpopular opinons, as EP has played something for it: without John Doyle and Cynthia Erivo, The Color Purple is not that great a musical.

Back to unpopular opinons, as EP has played something for it: without John Doyle and Cynthia Erivo, The Color Purple is not that great a musical. I agree with the sentiment but would modify that slightly: "without John Doyle, Cynthia Erivo and the rest of the Broadway revival cast, The Color Purple is not that great a musical." Cynthia was superlative, but I thought the whole cast of that revival were excellent, so I don't think it's fair to single out Cynthia as the only good one. Aside from that, TCP is definitely better as a book than a musical!

Oh I did mean it in the spirit of 'only in this production' Though I'd modify that (since we're being pedantic) to say 'The Chocolate Factory production' since a) I didn't see it on Broadway b) The intimate setting was also a factor in it being outstanding for me c) Leon Lopez was in it.

Resurrecting to get one off my chest:
I don't particularly like Nathan Lane. (I like him well enough doing his Nathan Lane funny man but I don't get the idea he's a 'genius') HOWEVER I admit the fella had it in him for Angels and I was wrong.
I feel better now. One 'friend' can ONLY talk about the genius of Lane in Angels and it is doing my nut...

Andrew Scott's Hamlet is very good, and I quite enjoyed it, but it's not the best Hamlet ever/the definitive version, and definitely does not mean no-one needs to perform Hamlet ever again.

hehe I liked it, it's my favourite in recent years (that I've seen obviously) BUT there's a long list of actors/directors I'd also wager can bring *something* to it.
(But I guess it saved us from Moriaty-in -America over the river. Sorrynotsorry)

I've been seeing so much, 'We don't need another Hamlet! Andrew Scott's is definitive!' the last few days...
Er, no. It was good, yes, but it's not my favourite. There were elements of the production that didn't work for me, and I didn't feel he was that outstanding in the role. Certainly not on the level of what Andrew Garfield is doing in Angels.

And Christ-Alive do we have to KEEP having the 'definitive Hamlet' debate.
But anyway, it's nowhere near what the other little Andy is doing. And I'll fight the fangirls on that one.

Unpopular opinions? That Shakespeare is unreadable and unwatchable. For me that is - I've always always battled with it, I just cannot enjoy any Shakespeare.

That Shakespeare is unreadable and unwatchable. I have to admit he rarely brings me much joy, apart from Macbeth and The Tempest and bits of Measure for Measure, which I love. I loved Andrew Scott's performance, but not the play.

Unwatchable depends on the production - I've seen the odd shocker! One of the playwrights on the Royal Court podcast, I think maybe Rachel De Lahay? said that every time she goes to watch a Shakespeare she feels like she has 'forgotten how to watch Shakespeare' or something similar. She has to get in the mode, and I guess for some people it's a case of tuning your ears into it. I have just never managed it... I have actor friends who swear that they can't read it, but as soon as they begin to perform Shakespeare, they love nothing more.

Shakespeare being unreadable is very sad and all because we try to read it in schools. It was never intended to be read. Even Will himself didn't bother to publish the plays. Of course, thank goodness we have them now but they are in essence working scripts. Anecdote to follow: I once had a troublesome class of 15 year olds with several lads who sat at the back and put feet on the desk etc. Pretty mild compared to today's troublesome kinds I know. I decided take them to the cinema to see Zeferelli's Romeo and Juliet which was on at the time. I was supposed to teach them R&J. Most of them would have wanted to leave school at the end of the year but had to stay til 16. They were not interested. I was an idealistic new teacher. But I was allowed to take them. And they liked the idea of an outing of course as it took up all the afternoon. Well, you know how this goes. They loved it. The hardest of the guys muttered, "that was good that was, Miss" and for the rest of my time with them they engaged with the lessons and read the text with interest. Never read Shakespeare.

Well if we're on a Shakespeare roll. Hamlet is a dull play. And the role of Hamlet is even more dull.
There. Said it.

Ooooh you're like Shirley Porter in that film. Did Lulu come and sing 'To Miss With Love' at the end as well?

I've been seeing so much, 'We don't need another Hamlet! Andrew Scott's is definitive!' the last few days... Is anything ever definitive? Especially with some of the 'classic' roles. I've seen productions of plays I love but over time I forget bits and when someone comes along that I like I've off to see it again. Plus with the many sides/parts of Hamet can any one actor play them all, don't you pick what you did a bit like Cleopatra?
