My Bloody Valentine- I won’t be able to hear properly for the next week or so, but - wow: far and away the best act I’ve seen this year.

A bit underwhelmed by NIN - don’t know if it was sitting in the rear stalls or the pissed up singing along and whooping whenever Trent Reznor sat down (or then stood up) that did it for me but it just never really took off for me.

Just got myself a decent front stalls seat for My Bloody Valentine on Saturday, so keep trying if there are any shows left that you’re keen on.

So I completed the March For Men in Queen Elizabeth Park yesterday - A) for the cause : Prostate Cancer UK and B) to prove to people that I’m not totally decrepit (yet) , I’m now going to see Loop at the Royal Festival Hall this evening and am planning on walking there from Victoria station. I’m just hoping I haven’t caught the fitness bug and will bore everyone who comes within ear distance of me with the story of my new ‘healthy regime’ 😛

Went to see Gruff Rhys at the Social tonight : first talking about his new album, a few questions from the audience (there were only 40-50 of us) before nearly 90 minutes of him playing songs on an acoustic guitar- great stuff (and great value too at £7.50 for a ticket: take note greedy bastard residents of the O2)

Amazing! I thought Ade had stopped doing comedy so I'll book this as soon as. You obviously saw Neville’s Island too 😛 Can’t remember the name of the play that he did at the Soho Theatre a year or two back but it had pretty terrible reviews (I had booked for the previews but it got cancelled and I didn’t bother to rebook when it got rescheduled) That poster isn’t doing it any favours, I’ll probably pass on this.

Sad to hear of Anthony Bourdain's death: BBC
One of the few properly interesting chefs left on TV these days, he'll be much missed. R.I.P.

Places like the NT, preview prices are only £5-£10 cheaper than the main run: rehearsals of shows in front of an audience, that may or may not yet be fit for purpose, should either be free, or charge a very low price for those attending.

Maybe it was some of the previous comments about this had not been leading me to expect much from this production, but I was rather impressed with this: yes the dance scenes were a bit of a shambles, there wasn't much of a real chemistry between the two leads and the sex scene was slightly embarrassing rather than anything 'erotic' (up a ladder?) but I liked the way this built to this climax, all three actors were excellent and at 80 minutes, it didn't overstay its welcome.
Not one to go and see if you're fond of pet birds though...

Well that was certainly 'different' (in a good way) - highlights being his versions of My Girl and The Way It Is- a nice touch at the end: a large bouquet of red roses were given to him by an usher, he then proceeded to run round the auditorium, throwing the roses to ladies in the audience, until he had just the one left, which he gave to the girl who had been turning the pages of the sheet music over for the pianist.

Do they get ‘name’ Irish actors who can sing, do they get unknown Irish actors that can sing, or do they get ‘name’ UK (or American/European) actors putting on dreadful diddly oi oi oi Paddy whackery accents - it’s a tough decision (and with regards to OFAH - a Regionally Prounounced version of a Sarf Lahndan accent?)

Are they now going to drag up every 70s and 80s sitcom and turn it into musical? Can't wait for "On the buses. The musical" That will be fun on here when it comes to casting. It Ain’t Half Hot Mum: The Musical - a sure fire winner.

Going to see this on Wednesday- sounds great! 😝 But seriously, the NT is supposed to be our flagship theatre - how can something (that sounds) so shoddy be put on display and people expected to pay top price and then come back to see more productions?

Went to Robert Webb’s book signing at Foyles on Charing Cross Road earlier tonight - to quote Tim Nice-But-Dim: bloody good bloke (not sure when I’ll actually get round to reading the book though, I have a mountain of signed books where I’ve read the first few chapters and , meaning to back, have then let reading them slide)

Not sure I’d rush to see this again (unless it was a free ticket) but I’ve certainly seen worse this year - Mood Music for starters, Tartuffe is a masterpiece compared to that.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Paul Anderson s performance in this it’s just that after seeing him in Peaky Blinders, he seems to be far too reined in playing Tartuffe-it needs someone to really go for it, a performance along the lines of Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs Of America that really goes at it hammer and tongs and dominates the play. As it is, I wasn’t really convinced why anyone would want to give Tartuffe everything. My bad, that should of course be Gangs of New York, silly me...
