MJ The Musical - Prince Edward Theatre (2024)

MJ is doing well on Broadway and unlike Thriller, actually has a plot and decent creatives behind it.

Theatre wise, I think either the Prince Edward or the Shaftesbury.

I do wonder if Thriller having run so long will affect MJ in London, if I were the producers, I'd be making sure that people know it's an entirely new show and nothing to do with Thriller.

It doesn't.

It is all set in the period before it blew up I believe.

Dear Evan Hansen is closing in October so clearly audiences don't want new, original and fresh.

Truthfully, theatre owners want shows that are successful and MJ on Broadway is doing well so it's a no brainer to transfer it to London.

I get the thinking. I just don't think it is good for the future of musical theatre.

DEH was not that fresh by the time it got here and, once the die hard fans had seen it, perhaps there wasn't enough audience to sustain it. Maybe the film version didn't help either.

Cinderella was new but not good enough.

But where is the next Come From Away? That unexpected story which captures the attention an audience.

Where is the next great British musical that becomes beloved for generations to come.

I know this is all a business. But surely there has to be a saturation point for this sort of piece.

Apart from Comet (probably not the best time for a Russian musical) and Bands Visit (which is on the way) we have had all the big musicals worth seeing from the States in the last 5 years already.

Hadestown never returned, Evan is closing, Come From Away (which is fantastic) has done ok over here but never really exploded in popularity like it did on Broadway, so it's not surprising they are relying on well known entities.

Suffs and Strange Loop both look amazing this season, but I doubt we'll get those for quite some time and I don't know if I'd want tp see either of them without their amazing US casts anyways.

Mean Girls was ok, but I certainly don't need to see it again. It 'just' recouped before it closed did it not?

Comet lost 14 million, Loop will not recoup and will surely close unless it wins the Tony and Suffs was off Broadway was it not?

I was talking more good shows than financially successful ones.

Think about it.

Just putting these together should be the answer: Come From Away is life-affirming, heart-warming and a show that everyone feels a connection to, because who could ever forget 9/11 and what they were doing that day?

DEH is a show about a tedious liar and a heap of teen anxieties that not many adults (the majority of ticket buyers) can identify with. And Cinderella was indeed just not good enough.

These lists are forgetting Beetlejuice which had just found its mojo on Broadway before it was ousted and is a very entertaining fun show which I believe is what people need and want right now. And while Hadestown isn't exactly uplifting, it's a very clever smart "grown-up" show with a soundtrack to die for. It MUST come back. And we're still waiting for Groundhog Day too...

Groundhog Day is coming. Be patient!

And sadly Come From Aways days are numbered

Sad, but I had a feeling it's time was coming. Such a shame as it's amazing...but the 4 times I've seen it I never had a problem getting rush tickets for it.
