Ms. Knight raises the roof twice! (although the Sylvia number reminded me of Made in Dagenham)

Beverly Knight gets her award. I have no idea if it's deserved for her performance, but she has been such a stalwart and sold so many tickets to so many shows, this is well earned.

Not that it needs any help but I bet the RSC will be putting those awards above the title when Totoro returns in November.

I’m so happy “Standing” got this. My absolute favorite show this season.

I know and understand that it is because of rights issues, but it does seem odd that, in the UK, I can only see the edited highlights of the awards on ITV... whereas if I was in, say, Germany, Norway, or the USA, I am able to watch the whole Olivier Awards ceremony, (almost) live, unedited, in its entirety on YouTube. Bonkers, really.

I'd forgotten how fantastic Hannah's voice is. That opening was so good.
And... I've been harping on for years about the announcer not putting "The" in front of the theatre name. It drove me mad. Seems they have listened to me. 😀

Beverley Knight is fabulous, no wonder she sells tickets. And how is she 50? She hasn't aged at all.

The guy from Tammy Fae sounds like he’s just run two laps of the theatre before going onstage to sing 😅

How is To Kill A Mockingbird in the new play category? Surely it's been around for years.

How is To Kill A Mockingbird in the new play category? Surely it's been around for years. Nope. It’s a new adaptation that premiered on Broadway pre-Covid and is now having its West End premiere.

How is To Kill A Mockingbird in the new play category? Surely it's been around for years. The Regent’s Park (?) one was knocking around for a few years but this one is Aaron Sorkin’s Broadway production which only opened here last year.

I’m a little behind. Interesting Oklahoma! didn’t use Marisha Wallace for since Cain’t Say No.
Probably going against the grain here, but I’m not keen on Hannah Waddingham as host. Didn’t like the opening number. It’s annoying how everyone’s beautiful and gorgeous and in Mark Strong’s case hot.

Tammy Faye cannot be as dull as this performance, can it? No. Weird choice. But I guess Katie B. wasn't available because of the baby? She was on the front row looking heavily pregnant, she shouted 'hey y'all' into a mic at the start of the song.. But she later went up on speech to claim her award.

Jodie Comer's performance better than Janet McTeer's? They're having a laugh, surely.
And nothing for The Band's Visit. Shocking.

Why is Book of Mormon performing? Are ticket sales poor? I believe it was to celebrate it’s 10th anniversary on the West End.

Why is Book of Mormon performing? Are ticket sales poor? It’s their 10th anniversary in the West End, so another milestone. They had The Lion King perform in 2019 as part of their 20th anniversary. I guess in the future, we’ll have SIX back at the Olivier stage should it reach its 10th or more anniversary.

Very happy for My Neighbour Totoro but very disappointed to see The Band's Visit go away empty handed when it should have won at least a couple awards (namely Actress and Score - though as mentioned earlier, the incredibly stupid parameters of that award meant it was against shows it had no business being up against - and although I didn't get to see it in the end, I get the feeling I would have wanted it to win Best Musical over Sky's Edge also, though I of course recognise that, outside of the Best Score fudgery, the actual winners were also incredibly deserving). I also thought that the speech for Prima Facie's win kind of exemplified all the reasons I didn't think it was all that good a play - it's all very well to want to start a conversation, but I think you've also got to actually have something of value to say about the topic for it to be a meaningful one. Pointing out a problem is easy, actually providing thoughts on what to do about it is hard, and the play only really does the easy bit.

Is Andrew Rannells there? It was his understudy. He wasn't a powerhouse like Rannells but the song is a dud Andrew Rannells/Jim Bakker never sang that song in the show.
'Light of The World' was sung by Billy Graham, played by Peter Caulfield, who sung it at the Oliviers.
It was an odd choice to perform, but I disagree the song is a dud. Granted it came across a bit flat at first, but the energy improved as it went on. It wasn't helped by the dark lighting they had in the background, where as in the stage show it was much more brighter and uplifting.
Very interesting that Katie Brayben was pregnant from the first day of rehearsal, so it makes no sense that the producers were apparently looking to transfer the show as fast as possible.

Between Sister Act, Book of Mormon and Tammy Faye, a not-insignificant proportion of the performances ended up feeling very preachy tonight.

Despite it being mentioned several times and them performing, I don't think I am any clearer what Tammy Faye is.

I didn't like the play much and I'm v surprised it's won. The massive popularity of it and JD's performance must have counted massively towards the decision.

Despite it being mentioned several times and them performing, I don't think I am any clearer what Tammy Faye is. I don't know that any show was able to represent what it was truly about given the brief time frame. "Omar Sharif" was, in my opinion, the stand-out performance of the evening, but it tells you nothing about the plot of THE BAND'S VISIT. TAMMY FAYE was hampered in its choices as the leading lady was unable to perform. She really does carry that show and is in all but a few numbers. The one they chose was the most up-tempo compared to the others and the only one that could work out of context. Arguably, Zubin Varla's big number could have worked but they likely wanted to feature as much of the cast as possible and due to a family emergency, Mr Varla was unable to attend.
