There were A4 notices around the front of house areas and a pre-show announcement was made. No "due to the indisposition of..." but just a "at this performance the role of..."
Chris was fine - there were a few jokes referencing the fact that he wasn't Paul. Obviously no budget for understudy costumes, he was wearing converse and jeans with Paul's jacket over a leapord print shirt!
Great show as it is every year.

Feels cheap not to have costumes especially as Paul had health issues last time.
Good to hear seemingly no booing. Crowds not always tolerant of understudies.

Paul was great in the show but for me the standout was Julian Clary. He can do no wrong ever....and Matt Baker was sure a surprise. They did an amazing job with this years panto.

Good to hear seemingly no booing. Panto, though, so who would notice?! Shame that they didn't boo the villain? ;-)

He was on tonight. We had a ball as usual! (not Julian's) Interestingly Gary Wilmot didn't do his song this evening. I wonder why. Pity as his numbers are usually fab!

Thanks for that Stephen . We saw it on Tuesday and he was still off. Absolutely love Paul and was worried for his dodgy heart. Christopher Howell did a great job, without the script, even managing the lengthy tongue-twister section with Paul Z and Julian. Matt Baker was in his element and made it across the high wire no problem at all. Gary's song, however, was on the menu and was so absolutely fabulous many of us gave it a spontaneous standing ovation. A mash-up of loads and loads of musical theatre songs, it must have be a total nightmare for the orchestra and not one to let their mind wander for a moment until it's over. Definitely an improvement on last year - Paul Z has new material and no one was plucked from the audience and no children either. This is back on top form. We laughed loads.

Im going tommrow afternoon and I hope he does it or my dad will be threatening to refuse to go again in protest ( days out with him can be fun.)

He did cough at one point but managed all other vocal moments in the show. Fingers crossed for you tomorrow.
I agree about Matt Baker... He was really good!

Well that was absolutely fantastic! Nobody does big spectacle entertainnent better. Julian and Paul Zerdin make it for me, I was in hysterics! Absolutely not a panto for the kids (Paul O Grady told the audience to piss off at one point!) But Zerdin really knows how to work the crowd, and Julian just owns the stage. Astonished at the motorcycle riders!
In fact the only disappointment was that Gary Wilmot didn't do his song! In fact he doesn't do much at all sadly. Matt Baker was great value, I had no idea he used to be a gymnast but it really shows with some of the stuff he got to do!
I appreciate it might be considered quite safe with the same cast but I do not care one jot. It's my and my family's annual treat and we all loved it!

Any idea what next years panto might be? Paul O'grady made a joke about Sleeping Beauty but that is about the only hint.

A great show this year - and I know we say this every year, but probably a good time for some of the cast to go out on a high (Zerdin, Havers, Wilmot...), try a different town and give someone else a go at the Palladium.
Get Paul back in drag and get a big female star to go alongside Paul and Julian... get Sharon Osbourne over from Nativity or bring back Dawn French? Or maybe Joan Collins?

Gary Wilmot didn't do the musicals song tonight. I asked the conductor why and he said Gary has been losing his voice and it would probably be reinstated soon. I'm so glad I heard it on my previous visit but still disappointed as I told family it was the absolute highlight. Hopefully it'll be on You Tube. Still s fabulous show

Also it needs to feel more christmasy. It could easily be June Do pantos (which run into January) ever feel Chrismassy though? Personally, the idea of a Panto in itself is so quintessentially Chrismassy that it doesn't need to big this aspect up.

Going to panto is christmassy but the shows itself isn't.

I see on the Palladium panto website that this Sunday at 5pm is a special performance. Does anyone know what might be happening?

Does anyone know if Gary Wilmots Song is back in yet? It wasn't this afternoon. I'm quietly hoping someone will manage to get a copy of it so we can hear..

Good fun tonight. Upset at no Gary Wilmot song though! Anyone know what the song usually is?
I do wonder what they would do if one of the mains was ill, especially Julian. Surely they would have to cancel? I can't imagine they have a duplicate of all of Julian's costumes fitted to another actor.

Or they have a standby.

Surely they would have to cancel? I can't imagine they have a duplicate of all of Julian's costumes fitted to another actor. Gary sings a few words or a line or two from over a hundred different songs from musicals. He does each in its original style and they segue together into one performance lasting around 8 minutes. It's a masterpiece and was the absolute highlight of the show for me, drawing an instant standing ovation and huge cheers. I can see how it would be very demanding vocally and need to be cut if he starts losing his voice but such a shame nonetheless. As it seems a lot of showgoers aren't getting to see it, let's hope it's put on You Tube at the end of the run. It should garner millions of views as it needs to be heard several times to catch everything.

Pleased to report that Gary’s musical song was back by tonight’s 5pm performance. The whole cast have settled nicely into their roles and the show was really on fire - a lively (but well behaved) audience with great performers leading the way. A tremendous way to end 2019 and begin 2020! Happy new year to you all

Does anybody know what the paw prints are on certain performances on the website eg on Sunday? Does it mean that something is different?
